An estate planner lays out two paths: if you hate your family, write a deliberately confusing will to trigger legal chaos after you're gone. If you love them, set up a trust instead. Either way, tell people you love them now.

If you hate your family, there's a way that you can get back at them for decades after you're gone. But if you love them, I've got a plan for that too. Here's the first plan: write your own will. Make it as confusing as possible. Give different people the same thing. Give someone 25% of your estate in one place in the will and 50% of it in another. Do the same thing for other people in your family. If you have an estate of any size, they will be fighting about it for decades. Unfortunately, many of you who love your family have done this very same thing, but you didn't mean to. But if you do love your family, The best plan you could leave them with is a trust. They will be forever grateful that you did. And also, while you're here, tell them you love them.
