Vanessa Marin offers three steps for when your partner wants sex but you don't: give yourself permission to not be turned on right now, ask yourself if you're open to it rather than waiting for desire, and tell them what you actually need instead of expecting them to guess.
Are three steps to take when your partner initiates sex but you're not in the mood.
Step 1 give yourself permission to not be turned on in that moment. You and your partner are two different people. You have two different sex drives. It's perfectly normal and to be expected that you're not always going to be turned on at exactly the same moment your partner is every single time.
Step 2 Try changing the question. Ask yourself, am I open to sex? Rather than do I have a strong desire for it? In this moment right now? This acknowledges that you don't have to be wildly turned on. You just have to be open to the possibility of getting there.
Step 3 See if there's something different you're needing. Your partner is not a mind reader, so if they initiate in a non ideal time or in a non ideal way, see if there's something different you could tell them that would work better or a different kind of physical contact that you might be open to.
Be sure to save this so you can use it in the future.
