Vanessa and Xander Marin say most marriages can't survive without sex, except when both partners are asexual. They argue sex is emotional intimacy and a rare outlet for men to express feelings, not just a physical act. There's no right frequency, but avoiding it usually signals a deeper problem.
Can a marriage survive without sex?
Our answer is no.
The only caveat to that is if you're both asexual. One of the biggest mistakes the average couple makes is thinking of sex as a purely physical act, when in reality, it's so much more than that. It's one of the most intimate, vulnerable ways that we connect.
Yeah, especially for us men who get so much crappy socialization telling us we're not supposed to express emotion. And so sex is one of the only ways we feel allowed to express that emotion.
Think about it this way. Would you ever ask, could a to survive if a couple never says I love you, or never spends any quality time together? Of course not. Now, there is no magic amount of sex that every couple should be having. And we always like to be clear in saying that there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons why you might not feel open to connecting physically with your partner.
But the bottom line is that the vast majority of her relationships will not survive without physical intimacy.
