Can you explain Mental Load to my husband?

Vanessa Marin explains mental load as the invisible work of remembering, planning, and managing household tasks, not just doing them. Women carry most of it in relationships, which breeds resentment and kills desire. Couples need a specific plan to share it.

Somebody recently asked me to help them explain mental load to their husband. So let's talk about it. Mental load is the invisible labor that goes into running a household and family. It involves keeping track of all of the things that need to get done, so remembering all of the chores, making plans for getting them done, checking in on progress, making adjustments as necessary, and making sure that everything gets finished. So it's not just doing the chores themselves, like stripping the bed. It's also keeping track of we have to wash the sheets once a week on Fridays, and these sheets need to be dried on the delicate cycle and, oh, the dryer needs to be serviced. Mental load is all consuming. It's never ending. And research has shown that in male, female relationships, the vast majority of the mental load falls on the woman's shoulders. So if you're not the one who's carrying the vast majority of the mental load in your relationship, it might not seem like that big of a deal. But I promise you, it is. Mental load is a huge source of resentment, of conflict in relationships, and even things like low sex drive. So it's extremely important that every couple comes up with a specific plan for how they are going to balance and share the mental load in their relationship.
