Feeling desire for others when you’re in a committed relationship

Vanessa Marin explains that sexual attraction to others while in a committed relationship is normal and human. The key difference is between feeling desire and acting on it. If you want to act on those feelings, monogamy may not be right for you.

Tint my eyebrows with me while we talk about being attracted to other people, even if you're in a long term relationship. So recently I got the question, what do you think about the desire to be with other people sexually when you're in a long term relationship? We need to clarify the difference between feeling desire for other people and wanting to act on that desire. You are always going to be attracted to people who are not your partner. It's not like we get into a committed relationship and all of a sudden you never notice that anybody else is good looking or desirable, like you're going to continue to have that attraction. And we need to normalize that attraction because it doesn't mean anything is wrong with the relationship. It just means you're human and you still have functioning eyeballs. Desire and attraction are one thing, but actually wanting to act on that desire and attraction is a different thing. And here is where we start the conversation about monogamy. I think it's really strange that we all just default to monogamy when the reality is there are so many different structures that you can have for your relationship. Why would we think that every single person on the planet should have a monogamous relationship? If you're interested in exploring different relationship structures and models, then check out the caption for a link to episode 31 of our pillow Talks podcast. So bottom line, if you're attracted to somebody else, even though you're in a committed relationship, it's no big deal. Don't freak out about it. But if you find yourself wanting to act on that attraction, then it just may be a sign that monogamy is not the relationship model for you. And that's totally normal. And okay.
