Short YouTube segment by Vanessa Marin explaining that stress is the primary cause of reduced sex drive. She states that stress triggers the fight-or-flight response and the release of cortisol, which suppresses non-essential functions like libido; chronic high stress therefore keeps sex drive suppressed. The video uses an ancestral/caveman example to illustrate why libido is deprioritized during danger.

Most people don't realize that stress is the number one sex drive killer. When you're stressed, your body thinks that it's under attack. It goes into fight or flight mode, deciding whether to stay and duke it out or get the hell out of there. During those moments, your system releases a hormone called cortisol, which shuts down unnecessary functions so you can focus all your energy on protecting yourself. Libido is one of the first things to go think about our ancestors. If a caveman was being chased by a woolly mammoth, why would he also need to have an erection at the same time time? If anything, a raging boner flapping around between his thighs is just going to slow him down. Cortisol is helpful if you are in danger in the moment, but when your body is constantly in that state of high tension, it basically ensures that your sex drive never kicks back into gear.
