A short conversation from a YouTube video (Vanessa Marin, March 21, 2023) examining how the term “penetration” frames sex from a male perspective and proposing alternative framings (e.g., envelopment). The speakers — sex therapist/author Vanessa Marin and her husband Xander Marin — reflect on how reversing penetration roles would feel, highlighting themes of vulnerability, power dynamics, and linguistic framing of sexual experiences.

Your book, you talk about penetration and you say it implies and reinforces that sex is from the male perspective. The opposite would be envelopment or enclosure.
I'm a sex therapist and an author and a word nerd, and I've never.
Thought about this before.
It's literally blowing my mind. And it makes me think of something else too. I'm a CIS woman. I'm married to my husband, who's a CIS man. When we have penetration, I'm the one being penetrated. But I want to go ask him, what does he think our sex life would be like if he was the one being penetrated? Let's go see.
What would it feel like for you if our sex life was you being penetrated? So you're not penetrating me anymore, it's just me penetrating you?
That would be different. That would be different.
I mean, but really, like, think about it. Like, what do you think it would feel like for you to be penetrated?
It would be probably really vulnerable. Yeah. Like, I. I would want you to be careful. Go easy on me, please.
Do you think you'd like sex as much if you're the one being penetrated every time?
I mean. Well, what I'm feeling right now is. No, because that doesn't sound very super appealing to me. But, I mean, I don't know. I would have to see what it was like, I guess, but, yeah.
Feels vulnerable to you.
Yeah, it feels vulnerable. And I would, I guess, feel a bit subservient.
