Vanessa Marin defines a dead bedroom as a long-term absence of sex between partners, different from a temporary dry spell. Many couples experience these periods, and while emotionally difficult, they're usually fixable rather than permanent.

What a dead bedroom is is basically when a couple has not had sex for a very long period of time. It's hard to know the difference between a dry spell, another term that doesn't really have a definition, but a dry spell is we haven't had sex in a while. So where do you cross the line from it's just a dry spell into it's a dead bedroom? Because to me, dead bedroom implies more of a sense of permanence, like it's dead, whereas a dry spell is like, yeah, we're in a little dry spell, but you know, we're going to get out of it soon. And the reality couples will go through at least having a dry spell, so we want to normalize. Like, yes, this is. It's very difficult to be in a situation where there's not much intimacy. You're really struggling with it. You don't even really know how you're going to get back to it. But it's also something that is pretty common and there are ways to get out of it. So it's not dead and permanent in that sort of way.
