A short YouTube conversation (Vanessa Marin and Xander Marin) about whether sex is necessary for a healthy relationship. Vanessa, a sex therapist, answers affirmatively and reframes sex as more than a physical act — emphasizing intimacy, vulnerability, play, and present-moment connection, and arguing physical connection deserves as much respect as verbal and emotional expressions of love.
Do we need to have sex in order to have a healthy relationship?
Ooh, that's a. That's a heavy one.
As a sex therapist, my answer is yes. I think one of the biggest mistakes that the average couple makes is we think of sex as a purely physical act. Like, it's just about the orgasms, that sense of release connecting our bodies physically. But it is so much more than that. Sex is one of the most intimate, vulnerable, connecting things we do with each other. Like, it's a way to play. It's a way that we are fully present in the moment and connecting with each other. We never ask questions like, can a relationship survive if you never tell each other you love each other or never spend any quality time together? Like, we put more value on those aspects of emotional connection. But I think we need to show the same level of respect to physical connection and to recognize that there's so much more to sex than just the physical act.
Now, unlike food and water, you're not going to die if you don't have sex. But your relationship, that might.
