👉 This van life hair dryer is a game changer!

Kathryn Bird tests three hair dryers for off-grid van life before a Warner show. The USB-C rechargeable dryer takes 3-4 minutes; the 1,000W EcoFlow-powered brush dries in about 1 minute and barely drains the battery. She picks the EcoFlow brush for quick touch-ups and the rechargeable dryer as the best portable option.

It's March. I'm in a field without electric hookup. In fact, I'm actually at one of the Warner shows. I've got wet hair. I need to dry it, look nice before I go on stage. What the heck do you do? Now, when I've got hookup, I have a standard hair dryer. This one, it's 2,000 watts. It works like any other hair dryer, and it does, it does the job on my fairly, fairly thick hair. First, what I want to show you are 2 new things that I bought, and I'm in the field. I'm gonna dry my hair, and I thought I'm gonna film this because I've not actually tested these out yet. So I got these in the recent Amazon sale. This is a rechargeable hair dryer. I haven't tried it and the reviews are really good, so we're going to test this one out. And then this one is like a straightening comb because my hair, when I let it air dry, just goes a bit frizzy and a bit annoying. And apparently this is really good as well. First, I'm going to start with this hair dryer. It's probably going to be a bit noisy, so I will probably mute this bit, but I'm just going to show you. So it's got the USB-C rechargeable slot on there. It's got a fan on one end and then the air intake on the other, on/off power button, and then a heating button on there. Right, let's see what happens. Oh no, that's the intake, that's the hair dryer. Okay, right, so then we've got— Oh, hello! You want a bit of that as well, do you? So you've got— I don't know if you can see on there. So that's gone cold. Oh, it's got a temperature gauge on it. We've got 1, 2, and 3. That's actually quite warm. Right, let's try this thing. This may take a while. I mean, I'm not expecting miracles. But it is warm, it's warm air. You'll be pleased to know I'm not going to make you watch me dry my entire head, but you can see, so the front bit that I've dried versus the back bit there, I mean, that took about 3, maybe 4 minutes, and it's definitely worked. Absolutely definitely worked. It's not as good as your proper plug-in 240 or 230 Volt hair dryer. Of course it's not, but it's the best one I've tried so far. I'm quite impressed with that. So next I'm going to show you this one. So plugging it into my EcoFlow on there. Hi! And then we turn on the bottom like that. Now I don't tend to use the high for very long, but the hot air comes out of there. Now that's a lot quicker. I mean, that's been maybe a minute. You can very, very much see the difference between the front that I dried and the back bit. Obviously it's a plug-in. You will need some sort of EcoFlow or power bank that is capable of doing 1,000 watts. I will leave the link to the one I've got. I'm also just going to show you these accessories very quickly. What you do is you take off the hair dryer bit. Put on, just match up the little arrows a bit and it just clicks in, and then again turn it on. It doesn't rotate, it's like a curling brush, but you can see if I take a bit that's really wet, you can see how dry it's got. You have to do each bit like 2 or 3 times, and then it gives it a little bit of a curl as well. My problem is I just get bored doing it. It's not my favourite thing to do, but so I often let it air dry. And then this is the last one on this, so again pop it on high for another bit of wet, and this is just a brush. It's warm air again. And it's a lot. Turn off. You can see the difference using the brush than using the— oh, here we go. We've got, we've got a complete mess here. That's about— it was about there, wouldn't it, my parting? But you can see the difference between just drying it with the dryer and then using the brush, like I've not done anything different on that side at all. So this is definitely my favourite one, but you do need the power on it. So back to this side. So we've got this bit that was dried with this, and then this bit that's still a bit damp actually, but you can see what my hair does when it is just sort of rough dried rather than nicely dried. So what we're going to try now on this bit that I've dried Is this. So this is a straightening comb. It's got temperature, so 19 degrees, 180, 200. So it goes 160, 180, 200. Let's put it on 180. I have no clue how long it's going to take up. So whilst I'm waiting for this to warm up, I'm just going to dry off the rest of my hair and then we'll use this. One thing I do want to show you is I think this was on, I think it was on about 95 when we started. So, uh, yeah, it's on, on 88 now, so I'm just going to turn it back on, dry the rest of my hair, and you can see what it's drawing. So there we go, that took literally, what, an extra, an extra minute or 2? It's a little bit damp still on the top here, but it's dry underneath, which is good. So I could do that for an extra minute, and I've got the EcoFlow at 87, so it barely used anything. On that. So this thing— oh, it's warm. Yeah, I mean, it's not like I, I can touch it, so it's not— it says it's at 150 degrees. If I took a pan out the oven at 150 degrees, that would hurt. And that is warm, it's not like burning. Okay, we're gonna let it warm up to, uh, 180. I think I pressed, didn't I? Uh, which would be nearly there, and then we'll try it. So there we go, we've hit 180. Yeah, it's warm. So you've got this side that I dried with the brush, so it looks a lot sleeker, and this side that was dried with this battery-powered hair dryer, and it just looks a little bit frizzy. And this bit at the back's still wet because, in fairness, I haven't dried that bit yet. But I wanted to leave it like this to show you what, what this does, so you can, you can clearly see the difference in the sides. I'm watching my— Hang on, let me Change the angle of that a little bit, and then, yeah, I'm watching myself in this as I'm doing it. So here we go. Well, let's put the wet bit out the way. Oh, that bit's still wet too. Let's see what it looks like when I've done this. I don't know, like, how long you're supposed to leave it on for or not. Curling it like a curling iron. Oh, it definitely curls. Oh, okay. I mean, you can see now that's actually not anywhere near as frizzy as it was. So I've just gone through that, what, 3 times, maybe 4? And that looks a lot sleeker. So this, I don't think this would dry your hair. Like, you would be there unless you've got very, very short hair or very fine hair. But on mine, it definitely Smooths it out. So yeah, as a sort of top-up before I go on stage or something, definitely. Would I use it in normal, normal life? Maybe. I mean, it's tiny. Normally I don't bother drying my hair anyway. Would I use it to sort of smarten myself up if I was going out for dinner or something? Absolutely. So yeah, actually I think this is probably worth keeping. This is definitely worth keeping. If I was going to keep just one of those, definitely would keep that. Obviously I'm not sending them back, just whether or not they're worth the payload in my motorhome. But that's definitely like so much better than any 12-volt hair dryer I've ever tried before. Really impressed with that. Uh, but this, this is always my favorite. But like I say, you can't use this unless you've got one of these. So those are the 3 appliances that I use to dry my hair when I am off-grid. I'll leave all the links in the notes for you. I would love to hear what you do when you're off-grid. I'm guessing most people are a little bit like me, especially in the summer, and just let it air dry. But in the winter, or if you've got frizzy hair or you want to look nice, it is nice to have some sort of option. So I would love to hear what you use. Please, by all means, drop your favorites below and we can all learn from you. I hope you found that useful, and I hope you're having a wonderful day wherever you are. Stay safe. Bye!
