Making Sneakers: Start to Finish

Watch a sneaker go from client brief to finished shoe across design, pattern-making, and production. Leather gets thinned and cut with UV-C, pieces are heat-adhered, and the upper is lasted and stitched to the outsole on a machine that grips with claws.

Basically everything you see here is composed of 3 different rooms. So design office, pattern making office, dedicated cutting and stitching just for samples. The client sends a brief, right? So that's a technical sheet. So we found the outsole, together we created a last after the outsole, and after that Pedro Design gave us that shoe. When it comes to pattern making, last was created, and after that, and that gives you the area you're going to be working with. This press is our UV-C. He cuts single layer there. But when you're cutting synthetic materials, foams, you you can actually cut multiple layers. When you're making a sneaker, the upper sometimes has a lot of different layers. If you're to stack all of these things one on top of another, it would be really, really thick. She's doing over there is they're thinning out the leather so they're able to keep a consistent thickness. These pieces are then gonna be applied to here as reinforcement. So once she heats it up, it's actually gonna adhere to one another. She's doing the mudguard. You see, if she pushes it on the right side 1 millimeter, on the left side 1, it's off, it's over. Now she's doing the tongue application. That's one of the many ways of doing branding on the shoe. So the upper here is what you think would be done into the lasting line. You're going to put that upper and last in the machine, grabbing the leather with the claws, pushing the last as you can see. And now it's closing. The machine is applying glue underneath. What you need to think is that that line is the outsole limit. That's the filling that he's applying there. This is called lateral stitching, and it's when you stitch all around the outsole and you further attach it. Now we're stitching to reinforce further. All right, so we're on the finishing line here, putting the outsoles in, insoles, laces, filling paper, take off the glue, and quality control. And the cleanest possible, basically.
