Will Humphreys talks with a resident working 50-60 hour weeks who hit burnout near the end of training. A mentor conversation and knowing the schedule would change helped. Burnout in residency is common, and persistence with support gets you through.
Are you burning out right now?
Oh, I'm not gonna lie. In the last two months of residency, I definitely have felt a little bit of that burnout. Just residency is hard. I'm in 50, 60 hour weeks right now. So I'm not gonna lie and say that it's easy. But I think knowing that there's a light at the end of the tunnel has really been helping. And I actually just had a good conversation with one of my mentors yesterday. Just being honest with her and about it and some of her feedback has really helped. And so I can't say that I'm not that I can't say that I don't see that light at the end of the tunnel. And knowing that change is coming and I think knowing that that change is coming is really helpful.
See, I think that's a big theme of what I want to like jump down to. People who are considering become physical therapists or people who are committed and they're in school and they're worried about it is that there's no profession that that's worthwhile that doesn't have periods of intense strength.
