The 2 types of "C" players on your team

Will Humphreys (Profitable podcast/series) explains that C players are productive employees who are not aligned with company values. He distinguishes two types: obvious non-aligned C players (resistant, disengaged) and hidden/destructive C players (manipulative, who undermine others). The video warns these individuals can drive A players out and previews a follow-up on how to handle them.

Hello and welcome again to the Profitable pt. As always, I'm Will Humphries here helping you increase your income, profits and net worth. Today we're going to be talking about the two types of C players. In previous videos I provided a team assessment tool to help you define who your A, B, C and D players are. What we do with B, C and D players is very similar. Essentially what we're focusing on is coaching these individuals up and or out of our company. But C players get a very special series of videos because they are the number one thing holding you back from achieving your vision. In addition, these are the individuals who drive your A players out of your company. So out of all the things I can do to serve you, the first and most important thing would be to help you build that Rockstar team. So let's get right into the two types of C players. As a quick review, C players are individuals who are highly productive and not highly value aligned. So these are individuals who get the product they were hired to do, but oftentimes are kicking back against the company culture. There are two major types of C players. There's the obvious ones who seem like they're the harder ones to deal with, but let me assure you they're not. And then there's the hidden ones. So let's start with the obvious ones. What does a C player look like? Well, essentially I want you to recognize there is no such thing as C level people. There's a distinction between an individual and their self worth versus the alignment. In our company, when we're talking about C players, we're not saying that these are lesser human beings. What we're trying to say is that they are not aligned with our company and it shows up like they just don't get it. Maybe they complain. They tend to drag their feet into staff meetings and I don't even like calling them staff meetings. They're team meetings. Staff is an infection. So they drag their feet into the team meetings. They have a little bit of agreeableness once in a while, but most of the time you just get this sense of resistance from these individuals. All that means is that they're non aligned. These are people that are more than capable of being A players in another company. But the reason we don't ever confront that is because we don't know how. I did a video on the 5 Reasons why we hold on to our C players. Please watch that video to get more knowledge around what you do and why you're holding on to them. But the real cancer to your company is that there is a type of C player that is absolutely destructive. They're rare. A true C player is a rare individual. But these are individuals who come into a company with the sole purpose of satisfying their own ambition and they will do it at whatever cost. The main excuse they're going to tell you if you do expose these individuals is that they have to do what's best for their family. What a load of crap. A players, they look at the world from a place of, hey, I'm going to do what's best for my family and your family and his family and her family. The destructive type of C players are hidden. These are individuals who will say whatever they need to say to their direct report to their team members. And it's always like this, bringing into the closeness, hey, you and I are good, you know, but it's. Have you ever noticed John? Have you ever noticed him? He's something about him, right? Well, I don't know, maybe he's got a lot going on at home. They're constantly planting these seeds of destruction because they're in a constant state of manipulation around their world. So listen, as you're starting to assess your seed players, it's really important to follow your gut more than anything else. The gut will always tell you what's wrong. I have never let someone go and regretted it. I have let go of dozens, dozens of people. I have never once let them go and thought, man, I wish I hadn't done that. I have done it multiple times where I have taken too long to let someone go. That is a true regret that I've had. So as we look at identifying these C individuals, distinguish between who's just not aligned and who's causing absolute destruction. We're going to talk about the next steps with these individuals in my next video. But thank you so much for watching. Please click like and subscribe if you got value out of this.
