Will Humphreys hates when candidates answer 'Where do you see yourself in five years?' with vague stuff like 'be happy here.' He wants ambition, a real goal like starting a business or moving into leadership, or honest uncertainty paired with commitment. It shapes who he hires.

During an interview. I love asking the question, where do you see yourself in five years? What are your goals? The reason being is because most people I interview after thousands of interviews have no idea. And so they give really watered down answers of like, oh, I just want to be in the company and be happy and all this crap. I love it when someone says, I want to start my own business, I want to be a leader in your company, or even, I don't know, authenticity matters when someone's like, I don't know where I want to be. I'm currently trying to find that path, but once I do, I'm going to be committed to it. There's a lot I can do with that person. There's not as much I can do with somebody who's just kind of expecting low expectations, trying to tell me what I want to hear.
