This is an interview excerpt (YouTube) where Will Humphreys asks Ken McKenzie about qualities he looks for when promoting leaders. McKenzie emphasizes integrity, honesty, caring, empathy, and being respected by staff; the follow-up explores what respect looks like in practice.
What are the qualities that you look for when you're going to promote a leader in your company?
When I am looking for a leader in my company, I'm definitely looking for integrity, honesty, caring, empathy. And they need to be well respected by the rest of the staff.
Yeah. Respect is such an important deal. Right. Like, respect is what does that look like in your clinic when someone is, like, getting your attention as a potential leader and they draw the respect of their, their teammates? What does that look like to you?
Yeah. Well, one, you know, they, they, they definitely lead by example. So they are when they're, when they're working, whether, in my case, when they're treating patients, they are doing things the way that things should be done, and others are, are looking at them.
