A Healing Moment Topic Safety

Dr. A'Shellarien Addison argues that emotional safety starts inside, not in your circumstances. She says true healing requires extending grace to yourself the way you do for others, and that the Holy Spirit can only dwell in a mind cleared of chaos. Creating an internal sanctuary means acknowledging both your pain and your peace.

Welcome to A Healing Moment with Dr. A'Shellarien Addison Addison. This is that part of the day where you just need a little help. This is that part of the day where you say, I just need a little encouragement. I need to know that it's okay not to be okay. Today's topic is safety. Safety. You're saying, what do you mean safety? I mean emotional safety. You know, there are spaces and graces that we find ourselves in where we feel comfortable. We feel comfortable talking about our emotions. We feel comfortable talking about our thought process. We feel comfortable being authentically who we are. There are other spaces where we would dare not— we will dare not say a word. We won't talk about how we feel. We won't talk about what we think. We just breathing so that things don't get worse. Well, today we're going to talk about how do I find that place of safety. You know, it's in the place of safety where you're able to express your emotions and know that it's going to be okay. It's in the place of safety that you can begin your healing process. And so what is the challenge we find ourselves in now? You can say part of the challenge is finding an external place of safety, a person to talk to. What I want to talk about is that internal place of safety. When is the last time you extended some grace to yourself? I know that's a foreign topic— extending grace to myself. We don't talk about extending grace to ourselves. We talk about extending grace to everybody else, right? If your kids act up, you like, you know what, it's all right, I love them. Your boo act up, you'd be like, it's all right, they had a bad day. If your grandma act up, you'd be like, it's all right, she old. You extend grace to— if your boss act up, you'd be like, it's all right because they gonna pay me on Friday. We extend grace all the time. You know the hardest place to extend grace? To ourselves. Can I extend some grace to myself and say, you know what, I had a rough childhood? Can I extend some grace to myself and say, you know what, I work all day and then I gotta come home, take care of these kids, then I gotta deal with this husband. I need some grace. I'm holding on. I'm doing good. So part of the challenge we find ourselves in, we are our own worst critic. We are harder on ourselves than we are anybody else in the world. And here's what I'm saying to you, that you have to create the space of safety in yourself so that you can begin the healing process. Did you know that part of you is already at peace and part of you has a lot of pain? If you're watching me right now, you could say, you know what, I got the peace that passes all understanding and God is good. And at the same time, your trauma could be kicking your butt. You ain't sleeping, you ain't eating, you have no internal peace, right? Because we say the joy of the Lord is my strength. But then you look like you've been sucking on lemons all day. So you help me understand what kind of chaos is going on on the inside of you. So here we are talking about that internal safety. So how do you get that internal safety where you can be a safe place of healing for yourself? Now, if the Holy Spirit dwells in all of us, then that means we have to create the space for the Holy Spirit to dwell. Holy Spirit not gonna dwell in a bunch of chaos. Holy Spirit not gonna dwell in a bunch of foolishness. So that means you've got to take some time to really think about what do I really need? What do I need to begin this healing journey? Where the part of me is that has pain? Where's the part of me that has peace? And you need to begin to have an internal conversation. Now, that is not a default position for many people. You're not going to sit there and say, well, part of me feels this way and part of me feels this way and you're gonna have an internal conversation. That's why you have me. That's why you need to talk to Dr. A'Shellarien Addison Addison Addison. And I'm gonna help you, and we're gonna sit down and we're gonna talk about the parts of you that need to be healed and the parts of you that just already have some peace. And that's how we create the internal space of safety, allowing the parts of you to talk to each other so you can get some reconciliation. So thank you for joining me for a healing moment with Dr. A'Shellarien Addison Addison. Until next time, be kind to yourself.
