How to identify different filter types.

Alex Johnson shows how to identify pool filter types by their shape and parts. DE filters have grids inside, cartridge filters are tube-shaped with a band around the middle, and sand filters look like tanks. Check the model-number sticker to confirm what you have.

All right, I just wanted to make you guys a quick video on how to identify quad filters in single filters. Let's search our tags. I just want to go through these real quick. Alright, so quad filter de. We have almost none of these. So a DE filter is most easily identified by looking and having a body that looks like a cartridge filter. So I'll search hayward cartridge filter real quick. So here you can see it's got this like tube shaped body with a curved top. Hey look, this has that tube shaped body with a curved top. Except it also has a handle on the front to backwash. Because the way that this works is pretty much everything that you want to know that you ask me questions about. Or if you're trying to identify a filter, you could probably just google it and get pretty close. Especially if you look at the model number. Model number stickers right here, DE4820. So if you want to identify a filter you could just look it up. Progrid vertical DE filter. So here's what the inside of a DE filter looks like. So it's a bunch of little screens that you pour DE or diatomaceous earth into the filter. It gets stuck on all of these and the diatomaceous earth is microscopic powdered glass and it catches dirt. It's so sharp that dirt gets stuck on it. Like little tiny molecules of dirt and algae get stuck on it and don't go through. Then we backwash it by running the flow backwards where we run the water out from inside these filters and blow all the dirt off of them. I'm waving my hand like you can see my hand right now, but it blows all the dirt off of these filters and then the water goes out the waistline which is right here, waistline goes out and over into the yard somewhere or sorry, it's right here. Waistline into the yard. And then we have a clean filter, then we rinse it, get all the dirty water out and we're good to go. So that's one way to identify filters is just look for the sticker with the filter model number on it and then Google it. The second way is to actually know how to identify it. So here's a filter quad. I'm going through ones that are already labeled. This is obviously if you have a new one that needs to be labeled. So we have a picture. Look at that pipe going in, pipe going out, no handle on the front here. This is a cartridge filter. You can tell it's a cartridge filter because it has a tube shaped body and in and Out. Sometimes the in and out are on opposite sides on different brands. We can also scroll down to the model number. Hayward is the brand C3030. Let's look it up. The ones here are brown, but, hey, look, it's a swim clear cartridge filter. So we can identify most of these filters just with the model number, but we should also be able to look at the picture and go, this is a quad filter. Let's see. Do we have any single cartridges on here? Filter, sand filter, single cartridge. All right, we don't have a single one labeled. Who's that person? I'm trying to think of the customer that I know has this man. I can't think of the name, but I know where they are on the map. There's one up here, and there's one over here. Let's check the route from a few weeks ago on Monday before we close their pool. That's not it. Who's got it? Candace Weaver. There we go. Candice Weaver. Let's look at that filter. Am I right? Do we have a picture of the filter? Oh, my gosh. No equipment photos. Are you serious? There's one. Okay. Nice. All right, so this is a single cartridge filter. It's hard to tell just based on the relative size if this is small or big. Do we have a sticker model number? All right, we have a. It's hard to tell that this is a picture of the filter, but it says shear 200 filter. Blah, blah, blah. Let's just search. Carbon 9422. 3850. Is that the correct number? I don't even remember. 94, 2238. Way off. Okay, so now we have a carven 200 square foot replacement filter. But how do we know which one it is? We don't. If we're replacing this, we need to know. You see this? This is kind of short. Has like a lid where it should keep extending up. This one has a taller lid. So this is 120 square foot. This is 100 square foot. This is for a 200 square foot, which is the one we have because this is sheer 200. You can also search that carbon shear 200. All right. I guess we need to get some guitar pedals and amps. Carbon pool. Hey, look at that. Sheer 200. Dirt catcher shear 200 filter. So single cartridge filter. There's no such thing as a tri filter or a dual filter. There is single cartridge, and there is quad cartridge. We call them quad filters. They're just four single cartridges. There's four of these so you remember the DE filters have little plates. This is like a million little folds of cardboard. It's not cardboard, it's like fiberglass or something. But it catches all the dirt. Every filter is. Where is it? So each one of these individual filters has a filter media of something like 80 to 100 square feet in each of these tubes. And then the filters get clogged up and we have to clean them and replace them. So it's pretty much like, I don't know, there's not a number. But if you take a filter, the more square footage it has, the more it can filter out before it needs to be cleaned. So if a filter is undersized, like a single cartridge filter, it needs to be cleaned on a 10 or 15,000 gallon pool every month. Excuse me, on a 30,000 gallon pool, if you put a single cartridge, the pump is probably too big and it won't even have the correct flow rate to keep the pool full. So that's a problem. So what we would need to do is upgrade to a quad filter. Sometimes that happens where they put too small a filter on. But then there's multiple sizes of filters. There is the squatty version, the little short C3030. This is not a C3030, which is funny. This is a picture of. It says 3030, but this is actually a 3040. So they just labeled it wrong and they're actually charging too much for it. So let's see, C5030 is the big one. You see how much taller it gets. This just this top half. The bottom half's the same. The top half gets taller and taller. Let's try a Jandy cartridge filter. So they kind of label them the same. It's Jandy CL series, 340 square foot. CL 460 is the taller one. Pentair clean and clear plus 320. So 320 is this filter. Square footage. Jandy 580. 580 square foot of filtering. Jandy CS cartridge filter. That's a single cartridge filter. So you can kind of tell like you see how wide and fat these are. Tall and skinny these are. That's kind of the difference between a single and a quad. But there's singles and quads. Then there's also sand filters that are a lot shorter and fatter and more like just a tank. Whereas cartridge filters are tall and skinny. Sand filters are generally a tank looking thing or. And they have holes on the sides with also a little lid on the top. Or they have their handle on the top. These are sand filters without a multiport. They have a side mount multiport. The multiport just means it's a bunch of different valves. That water goes in and out to send the water to the correct direction. So yeah, there's cartridges, there's de, there's sand. Let's look at another sand filter. Here it is, a tank with a handle on the top. A tank with a handle on the side. A weird looking tank with a handle on the side. Let's try Pentair tank with no handle on the side. And there's a cartridge filter mixed in with our sand filter results. So you can see it's a little bit different because cartridge filters always have a band in the middle. Sand filters almost never have a band in the middle, except for this stupid one right here. But it's not a band, it's just some screws. So cartridge filter band in the middle. You can go back to our other search, cartridge filter band in the middle. Look at that. So now you can identify cartridge filters, sand filters and DE filters. The main features are cartridge filter, band in the middle, pipes going in and out, nothing on top, no handles. Sand filters, pipes going in and out. Sometimes on the top, sometimes on the side, always have a handle. If you have a sand filter, you got a handle. If you got a cartridge filter, there's never a handle, but there's always a band in the middle. DE filter always have both a band in the middle and a handle. The handle might look funky like this one. Sometimes the handles look really funky like this one where there's a handle. This is the weirdest one that you. We service one pool that has these. We service no pools that has this style of handle. But they're kind of common in other parts of the country. Hayward, give me a real handle. All right, here's what a real handle generally looks like. David McCord has a DE filter. That's the other one. Let's look at it in the wild. Is it labeled with a tag? I don't know. There it is. Defilter. How can we tell? Because it says DE4820DE. Also, it's a tube shaped filter with a band around the middle with the handle DE filter, not sand. The handle doesn't mean sand. The handle means either DE or sand. But there it is. Let me go label this one real quick to make sure it's on here correctly. Tags filter DE Boom. Sold. All right, that's it. That's how you identify filters. Thanks for watching. Subscribe.
