Adarian Wilson tells fathers trapped in successful careers that the cage isn't locked, just comfortable. He asks: project five years forward. Will you be proud of who you've become? The polished image costs you fatigue, distance from family, and joy.
The comfortable dad never leaves his cage. Someone told him that cages with good benefits are called careers. I had the title financial Advisor. Clean, polished, safe, and it looks perfect on LinkedIn. But LinkedIn doesn't show the bags under your eyes or the ache in your chest when your kids ask, are you coming home early? But you already know the answer is no. And here's what I discovered the moment that I stepped out of that cage. I found a version of myself that I had forgotten. A dad who laughs with his kids instead of managing them. A husband that my wife actually wanted to talk to at the end of the day, a man that builds something that matters instead of maintaining something that is just killing him. Start by naming the cage. Write down what exact ways that your comfortable life is suffocating you. And then ask, if I continue this exact path for five more years, will I be proud of the man that I become? If the answer is no, you already know what needs to change. The cage isn't locked. You just need permission to admit that you want out. You're not broken for feeling this way. You're awake. Most men will spend their entire lives in a cage and call it success. But you. You're listening to this because something else is inside of you and it refuses to accept that story. That's not weakness. That's the beginning of courage. You were made for more than survival mode. And deep down, you already know that. You don't need me to tell you.
