My Evil Scheme To Dominate All Platforms
5 Apr 2017 · 17 min
In this episode of the Marketing Your Car podcast, host Russell Brunson shares a candid, behind‑the‑scenes look at his life as a public figure and outlines his aggressive multi‑platform growth strategy. He opens with personal anecdotes about being recognized in public—at a Verizon store, a grocery checkout, and an airport—and admits the discomfort and fear that fame brings, especially as he prepares to launch a new mass‑market book, an infomercial, and radio ads. Brunson then explains how his business evolved from juggling many offers to focusing on a single flagship product, ClickFunnels, which propelled revenue from $3 million to $30 million. He argues that the next leap to $100 million will come from mastering traffic rather than creating new offers. To that end, he details a diversification plan that moves beyond Facebook dominance into Instagram, YouTube (through Funnel Hacker TV and daily vlogs inspired by Casey Neistat), TV, radio, and direct‑mail. He describes hiring top talent, partnering with a leading Instagram influencer, and launching a behind‑the‑scenes vlog series to fuel YouTube growth. Brunson also promotes an upcoming “Fill Your Funnel” course and invites listeners to join his Inner Circle for deeper insights. Throughout, he balances excitement about scaling with vulnerability about the personal cost of being constantly in the public eye.

Welcome to Marketing Your Car, the podcast for funnel hackers everywhere. You're now part of a small group of underground entrepreneurs who are trying to change the world through the products and the services that we believe in. But because we don't rely on venture capitalists, we don't have financial safety nets, so we have to do things differently. We have to do things smarter. We do that through an art and a science we call funnel hacking. This podcast will give you a glimpse at the daily life of a funnel hacker, so let's get started. What's up everybody? This is Russell. Welcome to Marketing Your Car. It's actually, I'm not sure what time it is for you but it's late night for me. I'm coming home from the grocery store and I've had something interesting happen to me twice today. I wanna kinda talk about this 'cause I'm not sure what to do with it. Maybe you guys can help me. 'Cause it also like ties into my other, it's like a negative weight against the goals I'm going after. And so you guys are my therapy session for tonight. I hope that's alright. Okay, so first thing is, it's been spring break so my kids and I have been having, and my wife have been having tons of fun doing stuff and we decided to get them some of those watches so that, have you seen those watches where you can like, they can text me and I can text them, they can call me, it's like when the kids are gone, like you always know where they're at. There's GPS on so you have like, any given time you know where your kids are at. You can call them, you can text them, it's pretty awesome. And so we went and bought some of those but they didn't show up till today. So today we went and go get them from the store and we're in there like, get them all pre-programmed, everything working and then I'm sitting there and what's funny is my wife, She had something happen this morning. She got dressed up, she looked gorgeous. But me and the kids, the kids were all in their jammies. I was in my sweats, my hair's all over the place. And I'm just like, I told my wife, I'm like, I'm so sorry, we're gonna embarrass you going out today, but I don't wanna get ready. And so, yeah, she looks gorgeous and we all look like we just got out of bed, 'cause we kinda did. And we're at the store, getting everything put together. But it doesn't matter, 'cause I'm at the Verizon store, like who really cares, right? And as I'm getting all checked out, one of the workers there says, Russell Brunson. I'm like, yeah? I assume he was like reading something off, you know, whatever. He's like, how did you build such a big following? And I was like, I just froze. I didn't even know what to say. I'm like, a lot of hard work. He's like, didn't you write a book or something? I'm like, yeah, I wrote a book. And I have another book coming out next month. And then like, I didn't know what to say. It was like the most awkward thing. I was like, you know that scene in Dumb and Dumber when he comes out, he's like, hey, Big Gulps, huh? Alright, well, see you guys later. That's what it felt like. And I didn't know what to say 'cause I was so out of my element. It was just awkward. I felt bad 'cause I was like, excuse me, I was like a horrible host, right? I don't know what exactly it's called, but yeah, it was just kind of, I felt bad. And I called my wife, she's like, why didn't you talk to him more? I'm like, I don't know, I should've, I could've, I just, it just like, just caught me off guard, right? I didn't know what to say, I'm just like, ugh. And I felt bad, I was like, ah, I don't hope that, anyway, I always wanna be nice to people, I'm sure he's like, that Russell dude's weird, he seems really nice on his podcast and stuff, he's weird in real life. So yeah, and then tonight, so it's like 10:30 at night and I'm at the grocery store listening to podcasts, once again in my sweats and my, yeah, and I'm walking around just getting stuff, putting it in my thing while I'm listening to podcasts and just having a good time, taking my sweet time at the grocery store 'cause it's kinda fun on late night, no one's really around, and I'm doing that and then start checking out, so I take my headphones out 'cause I'm, you know, in case the cashier or the person wants to talk to me. I'm putting stuff on the belt thing, and as I'm doing that, all of a sudden I look back and there's a guy kind of standing behind me, and he's like, "Hey, is there a Ferrari in the parking lot?" I was like, "I don't know, maybe." And then someone grabbed him, 'cause she's like, "Oh, lane over here's open," and he left. But I was like, okay, that guy must, I assume he knows who I am, 'cause that's, 'cause I used to have a Ferrari, and that's kind of awkward. Anyway, it was kind of like, it was so, Once again, I was like, I didn't know what to say. It was kinda like, uh, maybe, you know, like, I'm sure I sounded so stupid. Anyway, so it's funny 'cause in the past, no one ever knew who I was, which was nice. In fact, in Boise, I purposely never advertised Hard of Hearing 'cause I don't want anyone to know about us 'cause it's kinda nice to have some normal life. And then it's been funny, every once in a while, maybe twice in my life, I'll be at the airport and someone will be like, Russell Brunson! And it's kinda cool 'cause it's like, oh, there's someone that recognized me at the airport. How cool is that? So that's kind of been it, but now it's happening more often in my own hometown, which freaks me out a little bit. Okay, so why does that freak me out? Well, I'm not gonna lie, I kinda get flattered by it. It strokes my significance, I like those kind of things. But also it's like, I don't wanna be on. That's why I like going home and not being on. I've been to the grocery store twice today in my sweats. I don't like being on, so that makes me nervous. I have a lot of fear about that. It's funny because, Like this year, the book's coming out, right? And the book is like mass market. Like I think it's gonna do well, hopefully. And we're gonna try to do an infomercial with it, which if we do that, it's gonna be on TV. And we're gonna run radio ads, it's gonna be on radio. It's gonna be like, it's gonna be out there. And then ClickFunnels is continuing to grow. And like, there's a lot of cool stuff happening. And I'm trying to like get me and the message and all that stuff out there. But then like, I have this like nervousness of like, I'm like, oh, the more I'm out there, the more people might know who I am. Which I guess is okay, but I don't know, it just adds another layer of like, makes me nervous and all that kind of stuff, you know? So, yes. And with that said, I'm gonna tell you what was really fun about today. A couple things. First off, it's General Conference. So for the Mormons out there, you know what it is, but those who aren't, twice a year we have what we call General Conference, and it's two days, Saturday and Sunday, where basically the leaders of our church, prophet, 12 apostles, a bunch of people all speak and it's awesome. So like we get donuts, we sit at home with the TV and watch church on TV with the kids and it's pretty fun. So that was today, Saturday, and tomorrow we have that again. And so during, after a conference and I went to Best Buy and I bought like a vlogging camera, I bought some other stuff and I bought it. And basically I'm thinking a lot about this, like one of my things I've been, really digging, drilling deep in the Inner Circle members this session has been diversity. I've been around now for 14 years and I know, I remember what happened when I got slapped by Google a lot of times, paid and then free, then free, then free, then free, I got slapped a ton, right? And Facebook got slapped a year and a half ago and luckily we got through it and Facebook's been really good. In fact, I feel like we penetrated Facebook We kind of, we're all over it. I'm sure that if you ever have been on my pages, you see my face every day, and I apologize that I'm not better looking, 'cause you have to see me in my hats all the time. But we're pretty much dominating Facebook. We're everywhere. It's fun and we're having great success with it, and it'll continue to grow. But we're doing really, really well there. But I hate putting all my eggs in Zuckerberg's basket. And so we do a lot of other stuff, like our Dream 100, and we have partners, and so we're growing there. But I'm also looking at what are the other core platforms? 'cause we're not doing great in the other platforms and I wanna go deep into each of 'em and so, you know, I tried Snapchat for a little bit and I was pretty consistent with it too, but Snapchat's hard to grow and so I think I'm moving off Snapchat, so I've decided to give up on that platform. But I'm really excited about Instagram and Instagram's cool because it's actually better than Snapchat, plus it's easier to grow an audience. Like, I started doing Snapchats, or Instagram, whatever it's called, Instagram Lives this week and I already get more viewers on Instagram Live than I did on Snapchat. I'm like, well crap, I should've been doing this the last year. And so that's been kind of a cool thing and so I went and I had a chance to meet the dude who's like the number one guy in my industry in Instagram. He's got a huge like 3 million person following and so I've become friends with him and like we're paying him to help us to grow ours and like promote us and like all bunch, so I'm trying to go deep into that channel and so I wanna, Just again, it's all diversity in platforms and channel and people, right? So we're trying to go really deep in Instagram. And then my next big play is YouTube. We've never done, we've never been awesome at YouTube, but I wanna own it. And so we're launching, as some of you may know if you've been listening to podcasts, Funnel Hacker TV, which is gonna be all on YouTube. We could obviously do it on Facebook or other places, but I want to force the audience to go to YouTube to consume it and to grow it. And so we got a lot of cool stuff happening on YouTube right now, but it's just not grown that big. But I think Funnel Hacker TV will be 'cause it's like actual TV show that's gonna, It's gonna be awesome. But then with that, I wanna, you know, we have I think 10 episodes that we've recorded that are all being edited that are mostly done. And when the book launch ends, so we're like 6 weeks away from the book, well, book launch is like 2 weeks away. And so 6 weeks away from launching the Phil Locker TV. Phil Locker TV episode 1 will start as soon as the book launch is over. And then basically once a week one will be coming out. So those will be really, really cool. But to stimulate those, 'cause those take a lot of energy and effort to do it. I'm starting like Funnel Hacker TV Behind the Scenes, which is basically gonna be me doing like a daily vlog, like Casey Neistat style. Yes, I have been watching a lot of Casey Neistat, and I'm geeking out on him, and he's really cool, and I really like him a lot, and I like what he's doing. And yes, we may be trying to get him to speak at Funnel Hacking Live, which would be super cool. But anyway, but I've been watching him, and I was like, I wanna do that. But he's like awesome, like he, has all his own cameras, videos himself, and then he edits it all, and I don't have any skills like that, so I found a guy in our community who's, I posted in our Facebook group and got like, I don't know, 50 people asking to help edit videos. There was one guy that for some reason I really just liked him a lot, and so he's gonna do the first test. We're gonna start next week, but basically I'm gonna be video blogging this whole behind the scenes thing, and then each day he's gonna take all the footage. I'm gonna dump it into Dropbox. Next day he's gonna take it and try to make like a, video blog Casey Neistat style that's gonna be living on YouTube and that'll be kind of its home and it'll be like what, it'll be like what's, like the, I don't know the right word but it's gonna help bolster up the Funnel Hacking show. And my goal is to go deep in YouTube and dominate and to own it and just to like figure that out. So we're gonna be hiring all the best YouTube people in the world and just, getting to understand it and know it and then spending a lot of money and energy and effort so we can dominate that platform so that as big a platform as we have on Facebook, we'll have the same thing on YouTube, we'll have the same thing on Instagram and we're just gonna keep going to the core platforms that our people are at. And the same thing now, I wanna master TV, I wanna master radio and potentially direct mail magazines too. And anyway, so if you look at like me, like that's my, in fact I wish you guys were inner circle. If you could all be inner circle, my life would be so much easier. I could show you guys all the stuff deeper. But inner circle means I'm showing people that my first 5, 8 or 9 years of my business was all about creating offers and we jumped from offer to offer to offer and we got stuck at like $3 million a year. And then as we figured out which offer was our best, which was ClickFunnels, then we shifted instead of creating a bunch of offers, we kept one offer but then we created, I used my creativity on different front-end offers to get people into ClickFunnels, right? So my webinar, my books, all those things are creative things we've created to get to get people into the one thing we're trying to sell, which is ClickFunnels, right? So there's little nuances. So when I go from zero to like $3 million, I got stuck there for like 5 or 6 years, we couldn't break past that. I was focusing my creativity on lots of new offers. When I shifted my creativity from instead of creating a bunch of offers to how can I sell more people into one offer, that's when it went from $3 million to $30 million. And my goal to go from $30 million to $100 million is to shift my creativity from different offers to mastering traffic. And so my creativity's gonna be focusing for the next year to 2 years on traffic. Does that make sense? So like, in my early life it was like every month we're launching, okay, NeuroCells, our supplement, then we got a thing we're doing in the weight loss market, Body Evolution, then we got this thing in the dating market, then we got this thing in the couponing market, and like every month it was like rolling out a new offer, right? And again, that's where we got stuck at that level. And then when we focused everything on one offer, ClickFunnels, first it was the webinar, we promoted that. If you listen to the podcast, every single week for an entire year, nothing but the podcast. Then we added a book funnel in there. Now we have the webinar and the book funnel both pushing into that. And then now I got the next book and we got the perfect webinar script, we got a bunch of front ends that all lead to the thing, but all we're really focusing on selling ClickFunnels. And when we focus on one singular thing, and so we went from 3 to 30, and then go from 30 to 100, I think it's, we've got enough front end offers. I don't wanna create anything new. I just wanna focus on, creativity within traffic and what are all the different ways we can get traffic into it. And so it's mastering all these other platforms and getting creative and figure out how like we can be the best at YouTube, the best at Instagram, the best on TV, the best in, and really like spending the effort and energy to do that. I think that's really how we'll scale to the next level. So anyway, as I was showing the Inner Circle members, I'm like, this is like a million-dollar business is creating different offers so they figure out what people like. They go from a million to like 10 to 20 million, it's like now you figure out what people like, now focusing on things you can, like front end funnels to get people into that offer, and then going from like $10 million to $100 million is now focusing on creativity and the traffic. And yeah, so for me it's like that, but the thing that sucks though is like for me to go and do that and get them more traffic, what do I gotta do? I gotta put my face out there and then what happens? Then it's 10:30 at night and people are asking me if I have a Ferrari while I'm sitting there checking out groceries, so that's my fear. Anyway, so there's the conundrum, but It's all good problems to have. Anyway, so I just wanted to kinda share that with you guys 'cause I thought it was funny. But a lot of times we have like a goal that's pulling us or pushing us, whatever, one direction, but then we've got like our fear of something else that's pulling us the other way and it keeps us in the middle. And I just don't want that to happen to me, so I thought if I confessed it on live podcast, I guess it's live right now, but it's not live when you listen to it. If I confessed it on the Marketing Your Car Podcast, then Now I gotta forsake it, right? I don't know. I don't know how that all works. So, alright guys, I'm done. Take the groceries in and get to bed. We got a long day tomorrow watching conference in our jammies eating donuts. It's gonna be amazing. And then Monday, Monday's when I have to repent of my sins. Monday I'm doing a week-long juice fast 'cause I've eaten enough carbs in the last 48 hours to basically all of next week and the week beyond, week on. I'm gonna jump back into normal life mode, plus I'm gonna be vlogging, which is fun. So it's like, one of the cool things about vlogging, I'm sorry, vlog, V-L-O-G, vlog. The right thing about vlogging now is that it makes sure my life's not boring, which is like, what's kind of fun about Snapchat and Instagram is like, it forced you to like realize if your life's boring or not, 'cause it's like, I'm documenting like all these things throughout the day, and if I don't do anything, this is gonna be a really boring show. And so like the next 4 days is actually insane. Like I may or may not have purchased a full, custom fit Batman suit that may or may not have showed up yesterday. So that's gonna be on episode number 1 'cause I gotta open it, reveal it, and I'm filming JV videos behind it, a bunch of other stuff. That's insanely cool and then we got a whole bunch of other things so anyway, you have to watch episode 1 if and when it ever gets done. Anyway, that's the plan but it's gonna be fun and so I will share with you guys the journey, what we're doing to to dominate all the platforms. And if you're at Funnel Hacking Live, we sold a course called Fill Your Funnel that will eventually be at fillyourfunnel.com, but the live training actually starts on Monday, which is kinda cool. But we're gonna take people through this journey with us over the next year of like, how do we scale traffic? And anyway, it's gonna be kinda fun. So we'll probably open up registration for it in a couple weeks. If you guys are interested, go to fillyourfunnel.com, you got a waiting list, and you can get your funnel filled with leads Prospects who wanna give you money, 'cause that's my focus, at least for the next 12 months and probably beyond.
