Shrink The Funnel, Extend The Value
18 Apr 2017 · 6 min
In this episode of the "Marketing Your Car" podcast, the hosts give a behind‑the‑scenes look at a live book launch and the funnel‑hacking mindset that drives their work. They describe the intense, deadline‑driven environment of launching a free‑book funnel, including late‑night testing, order‑flow checks, and the emotional mix of excitement and fatigue. The core strategic insight shared is a shift from long, multi‑step upsell/downsell sequences to a "shrink‑the‑funnel" approach: a streamlined front‑end that still raises the average cart value through targeted upgrades (e.g., Funnel Hacker Black Box, fast product‑creation training) and a single upsell/downsell. After the purchase, the funnel extends value on the backend with a 90‑minute training video, a multi‑day web class, and a high‑ticket $997 ClickFunnels upsell, aiming to build a lasting relationship rather than a one‑time sale. The episode emphasizes making the funnel experience enjoyable for customers, leveraging urgency to get work done, and using education‑based follow‑up to increase lifetime value.
Welcome to Marketing Your Car, the podcast for funnel hackers everywhere. You're now part of a small group of underground entrepreneurs who are trying to change the world through the products and the services that we believe in. But because we don't rely on venture capitalists, we don't have financial safety nets, so we have to do things differently. We have to do things smarter. We do that through an art and a science we call funnel hacking. This podcast will give you a glimpse at the daily life of a funnel hacker.
So let's get started. Good morning everybody, guess what today is? Today is book launch day. And I'm so excited with this really weird underlying feeling of being so tired that we totally were up last night at the office till 3 and now it's 9 so I got 6 hours since we were, so 5, 6, 5, 4, 4 and a half hours of sleep? That's pretty good. So a little tired but feel good and excited and nervous all wrapped into one huge thing. So the book launch goes live 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5 hours from right now. So we're going in, I have to finish the initial sales page, sales page, for selling only a free book. It's pretty intense and amazing and exciting and I cannot wait for you guys all to see it. In fact, by the time you hear this, it'll probably be live. So that's what's happening today is we're going live and this is like 18 months worth of work and effort and stress all coming down to today. And it's funny because, It's interesting, like at our events we do a hackathon and make people stay up late and work and get a project done. Our certified partner event, like make you do a hackathon where they go stay late. At our FAD event we do that. There's something about having a deadline that makes things get done. 'Cause like, we've had a long time to work on this funnel, but until it was like, 'Kay, this happens tomorrow,' like we just, there's something about deadlines that make things actually get done. It's kinda like how urgency and scarcity get people to buy. It's like urgency and scarcity gets you to get stuff done. So we had about 5 or 6 of us hanging out at the office last night, we ordered sushi, working on the funnels and the pages and the videos and the, and just all this stuff and it's turning out cool. So I know they're all doing the testing now, make sure all the order flow works and nothing breaks and all those kind of things. But that's kind of what's happening. So I'm excited. So this is gonna be a short one 'cause I'm almost to the office already. I got a lot of work to do today to get this thing live but my one thing I wanted to share with you guys that I thought was kind of cool is I talked to the Inner Circle group about this like back in the day I used to think that like the goal of the funnel was to like sell people a thousand different ways so we used to have these funnels that were like really long, like not like a good long either, it was like upsell, downsell, upsell, downsell, upsell, downsell, like just kept going until like people hated me and I thought that was like the power of funnels and it's not. You can make a lot of money off somebody once through a funnel but if you do it right, you make a lot of money with them forever. Like it should leave them having a better experience than without buying, right? Or like it should make the buying experience better and not a worse experience, otherwise then the funnel was, like a bad thing, right? And I don't want these to be bad things for me or for anyone. And so I've been, I'm sure you've all been into funnels where you get caught in this trap of upsells, downsells, and it's like horrible, right? So my whole mindset with this launch is like, how do we shorten the funnel, right? Which seems counterintuitive, but like, I wanna shorten the funnel and then extend the value on the back. So what that means is basically, when you go to the book funnel, you notice a couple things. You go to page 1, you put in your shipping address on page 2, Basically you go from the book to we upgrade you to the Funnel Hacker Black Box, also we put in the, our fast product creation training, right? So even though it's a free book, like during checkout process people can spend, what's that, almost like $70? So it's like we increase our average cart, potential average cart value that much even though it's a free offer. And then we just only have one real upsell. So upsell's there, if they say no there's a downsell, but other than that it's over and then the transaction ends and on the thank you page this is where we start the extending of the relationship building side of it, right? So you come in, thank you page, there's the 90-minute video of me training, which is like one of my best, I'm proud of it, one of the best videos. So they get that and they get like 90 minutes of like education and training and then it's like amazing, then the call to action at the training is to opt in for this web class, they opt in to the web class and then there's like 2 hours and 20 minutes of training that happens over the next few days. And anyway, when you look at it, it's like I'm extending, I'm shrinking the cart while still increasing the average cart value and then extending the value on the backside of it. But anyway, that 5-day class pushes into the $997 ClickFunnels thing and then from there it transitions to the next thing, anyway. But it's just, it's interesting. So my thought for today is first off, make your funnels cool so people have a good experience and they enjoy the process. Shrink, the size of the funnel while increasing the average cart value in a cool way that people enjoy, and then extend the backend follow-up funnels through the training and education to build a relationship and rapport with people. So anyway, that's my thoughts. I might be completely wrong, but I think I'm right. So we'll find out soon, like 5 hours from now. So anyway, appreciate you guys all for listening. Hope you have an amazing day, and I will talk to you soon.
