Russell Brunson shares day three of his hackathon in Boise, where the focus shifted from coding to teaching developers why ClickFunnels matters. He's moving to a quarterly sprint model: three months deep on one product, then a month off. This quarter the entire team is rebuilding Backpack, the shopping cart and affiliate system.

Hello, hello, hello everybody. This is Russell Brunson and welcome to Marketing in Your Car. Welcome to the Marketing in Your Car podcast where you can increase your traffic, conversions, and sales in just 10 minutes a day. And now here's your host, Russell Brunson. Hey everyone, I hope you guys are doing awesome. I am heading into day number 3 of the hackathon. Well, the official hackathon is like day 6 or something of when everybody started coming in. It's been a little nuts, but it's been really, really good. I don't know if you guys ever do this, but sometimes I have a tendency to overcommit to a whole bunch of things at once. So for example, right now we've got Anthony and Brandon in my home filming a product for Biohacking Secrets. We've got the cleaning ladies in the house cleaning. We got people out fixing our pump because the well broke again. We've got people working on the pool house. We've got my wife and two of her friends working out with a trainer. We've got our accountant who's related to Colette, my wife, who slept over last night on top of Dave. Plus we took like 30 people to this really amazing restaurant called Barbacoa last night. All the people that, all the programmers and the marketing that are here. And it's been nuts. Trying to juggle and do everything. But it's been really, really good. It's been interesting, like normally when we do our hackathons, it's like we come in, we talk for 15 minutes, and everyone locks down and we just, well I don't code, I wish I could, but we code and I write copy or do pit funnels or whatever and we just go, go, go like crazy. And this one's been a little different and not different in a bad way, just different and it's funny 'cause the person in me is like, I just wanna like go, go, go, go, go, go, go and this one's been interesting. It's been a lot about like bringing in again, our developers from around the country, bringing our marketing team in, like, and trying to build better relationships with everybody so that everybody can work faster. It's one of those things that's like, take 2 steps back so you can go 3 steps forward type thing, you know? And so it's funny 'cause me and Dave and a couple of the guys on the team are very like, we're very like, move things forward every second of every day focused. It kind of is driving us Looney Tunes and crazy, but I see the value of it as well. In fact, the first 2 days, these guys, the programming teams, they spent, 2 days together and it wasn't like us coding and solving problems and fixing bugs and adding new features and stuff like I kind of assumed and thought it was gonna be. It was a lot more like helping the entire dev team really understand why ClickFunnels matters, why it's important, why our customers want what they want. And so it was like hours and hours and hours and hours of discussion explaining to them like this whole world and what internet marketing is and affiliate marketing, why we want tracking IDs and why we want, you know, sub ID 1 and sub ID 2 and why we need our stats right and why this part of the stats don't make sense Helping them to understand it, which again isn't like moving things forward, but it's building a foundation so that we can move forward a lot faster. And so it's just been one of those things that's been necessary but drives the people like me bonkers who just wanna move forward. But I think it's been good. It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next 3 months. 'Cause we're spending this week to kinda build this foundation, get a good understanding, set the goals and the road marks and the game plan moving forward. And then they go home. They basically got 3 months, a 3-month sprint to get these certain things done. And then, uh, and then month 4 we'll meet again. So once a quarter we'll get back together and kind of do the same thing. Hopefully the future ones will be less talking and more coding just because everyone's getting on a better foundation. But, uh, and every, every 4 months everyone flies back in, set new goals, set new foundations, set new groundwork, and everyone goes back, boom, and kind of doing that in and out thing every quarter, which is kind of the game plan. So We'll know more over the next sprint of 3 or 4 months what we get done. So one of the major things we're working on for the ClickFunnels hyper users like me, we're kind of rebuilding Backpack. Not rebuilding it, but a lot of it was like we were trying to figure out how to make Backpack the best shopping cart affiliate platform in the world, right? I think when we built initially, it was like we knew we needed it, so we built it and it was out there and it works, but it's not like the best. So we had like two thoughts, like one is we either kill it or number two, we gotta make it the best. And so we spent one day just basically going through every shopping cart affiliate platform out there. We've got a lot of accounts, went through all of them and like categorized like the pros and the cons. This one's awesome 'cause it does this and this, and this one sucks 'cause it doesn't do this, and this one's great. And looking at all this stuff, which was really fun actually to see how everyone does different things. And then from there, breaking it down to like what do we want ours to do and how do we want ours to function and how do we want ours to be structured. And so we took, I feel like we took the best pieces from a bunch of different spots. And another cool thing is we, and this is like new to me and to our world, one of the guys on our team is a UI, user interface and user experience guy, and he does like the design and coding part of the user experience, but more so he tries to really understand. So like, we went and we found 10 or 15 hyper users of Backpack and he called them on the phone and talked to all of them and figured out what they like and what they don't like and what they wish it did and what they're, you know, like, and all these things, and so like, and then, He did the same thing with me and it was just kind of cool because we saw these really weird commonalities among all the hyper users that we all want it to do certain things it doesn't do and they were all like the same things and there's this really cool crossover blend and so that was really cool too. So anyway, I don't know if that helps any of you guys but hopefully it does. Hopefully it makes you kind of think through the process and things that you're doing and give you some context or some ideas. Yeah, that's kind of what's been happening. So I'm excited for the new backpack. The plan initially, what was interesting with this hackathon was we were going to focus on Actionetics. That was going to be the big driving point. But when we had Todd, Dylan, Ryan, and me, and Dave, a couple guys here, and we were looking at like what we— anyway, what we thought we needed to work on for the next 3 months, it shifted from Actionetics to backpack. So it's been interesting. So backpack will be our focus for the next, hopefully the next 3 to 4 months. At the end of summer, a little after summer, is when we do our next hackathon, everyone get back together, and we will shift focus, hopefully, as long as we finish our initiatives, to Actionetics. One of the other interesting things we've done, it's just funny how all these lessons apply in so many areas of your life, right? It's like, right now the way that our dev team has worked is everyone is spread across the platform working on different things, right? So it's like, okay, this guy's doing integrations, this guy's doing bug fixes, this guy's, you know, bug fixes in Backpack, this guy's doing bug fixes in Actionetics, We're filming this feature in the marketplace. And like everyone's kind of all over the place. And because of that, it seems like nothing ever gets done. 'Cause everything's like incrementally inching forward. And I think that most of us entrepreneurs have the same problem, right? Like we're doing 12 companies at once. And because of that, none of them are making any money. And so what our focus is for the next 3 months is for everyone to focus on Backpack, which is gonna be a really interesting experiment where basically everyone's focusing on one thing. So that way when we do our daily standup meetings and things like that, like everyone's dealing dealing with the same problems and everything is interrelated. Now there's— we're hoping there will be a lot more value for everyone because of that. So anyway, just a couple of things we're learning through this process that hopefully will benefit you guys as well. So anyway, that's about all I got for today. I've been up early this morning. We did some Wim Hof Method which doesn't make any sense to you guys now but when Biohacking Secrets comes out, that will make a little more sense. And it's crazy, I actually did the process and I held my breath for 3 minutes. Which doesn't make any logical sense to me at all outside of the fact that we did it. So it's crazy. First time I did like, I think it was a minute 30. Second one was 2:45, and the last one I did was 3 minutes. So crazy, just crazy, crazy cool ninja things that are happening. So anyway, if you guys want to geek out with me on that, when biohackingsecrets.com comes out, you'll be able to kind of dig deeper and see all these weird things we're trying and testing on ourselves and how that actually relates back to performance in anything. It could be sports, it could be in business as an entrepreneur, as a leader, as a speaker, as a whatever it is that you do and that you want to do better. So anyway, that's what I got you guys. I'm almost to the hackathon office. I don't know if I told you we rented an office for the hackathon because we had too many people to fit in our other office, which actually worked out really good 'cause our other office, then the heater broke, or the air conditioner broke, and this whole week's been like over 100 here in Boise, which is really hot for this time of year, and so like my main office is It's horrible, it's so, it's insane right now. So I had to go back yesterday to do a webinar, we had a big webinar with Jason Fladeland. I get back there and it's like 120 degrees in the office and I've got on like long pants on and anyway, so I go and we did the webinar, which I did my webinar and then Jason goes and he's one of the best webinar pitchmen in the world so he gets excited and he wants to plug in what he does. So my typical, you know, 2-hour-long webinar totally ended up going for, uh, I think 3 and a half hours we were on that thing. And so when we got done, I was like lightheaded and sweating, and my legs were soaked from like my pants. And it was, uh, it was pretty crazy, but we survived it. So I think the aircon guy is supposed to have everything fixed today, hopefully. And so we'll be able to be back into a normal office here in the next little bit. Oh, and the other cool thing, man, so many cool things are happening, way too many things at once. Like next week we have Inner Circle, so that made me think about this, is our Inner Circle's next week. And one thing about the Inner Circle is that usually we do them in hotels here in Boise, but we're like tired of renting hotels, so we're like, we should get our own. So we're basically, we just bought a new office and we're turning it into It's about an 8,000 square foot office where half of it we're gonna chop off and turn it into a mastermind room where we can fit about, well, we're not gonna have masterminds this big, but we can fit about 80 to 100 people in our office. And the other half will be our new office, which will be amazing. So we're building our own Inner Circle mastermind room, which we'll also use for our certification event. Speaking of certification, we are launching a new certification funnel today. Man, I bet you guys think I have the worst ADD ever. We're juggling so many things, but they're all coming out really, really good, which is exciting. Alright, well before I tell you anything else and you guys think I'm having worse ADD, I'm gonna get back to work and get some of these projects pushed out the door. I'm also gonna jump off because I'm completely lost. I can't find the new office, and so I think if I turn off the Marking Your Car and start focusing, I should be able to find it, in theory. So we'll see. Anyway, appreciate you all. Thanks for listening, and we'll talk to you guys soon.
