Turn Off The Dang Football Game And Get Back To Work
3 Feb 2016 · 11 min
In this solo episode of the Marketing in Your Car podcast, Russell Brunson opens with a personal anecdote about his home’s heating system malfunctioning, which sets a tone of time‑sensitivity. He then shifts to a broader discussion about how people should identify and obsess over a true passion—whether it’s marketing, NLP, bio‑hacking, or any other field—and devote their time to learning and creating value. Using a conversation with a friend who loves watching football as a case study, Brunson argues that spending hours watching live sports is a massive waste of productive time. He recommends replacing full‑length games with short highlight reels, and reallocating that time to reading, skill‑building, or building a business. He emphasizes that every waking minute should be guarded because it could be used to generate income, improve health, or serve others. The episode concludes with a call to action: turn off the TV, find a passion, read books to discover it, and start creating value, while also noting that his second book is in draft form and will soon be released at a Funnel Hacking event.

Good morning everybody, this is Russell Brunson and welcome to Marketing in Your Car. Welcome to the Marketing in Your Car podcast where you can increase your traffic, conversions, and sales in just 10 minutes a day. And now here's your host, Russell Brunson. Hey everyone, so I hope you guys are having a good day today. It's freezing here in Boise. I don't know what it is, I keep thinking it's going to be summer and then no. And the way our new house is built, I don't know if I told you guys this, it's one of the pains of our house. So it's a little bit bigger of a house and and there's 4 different heating zones in it and my bedroom is the last one. And also the water heater, or the, yeah, the water heater supposedly is, or not the water heater, the heating system and the water system are tied together. So what happens is because we're the last room, we have those cool like Nest controller things, right? So like we have this temperature set in our room to 71, which is like perfect normally, right? But when it gets cold, it'll show like 71's where it's trying to get but it's like, but it's only actually 67 or whatever that is, right? And for some reason, like, unless it's, if it gets to like freezing or below, like I'm just pretty much screwed. Like that part of my house is free, like at night we're freezing cold. And like, so we have all these space heaters and we're trying to warm it up and everything, but like it can't get warm. We've had like 5 guys come. So that's part of the issue, but that's okay 'cause we can bundle up in blankies and you know, all that kind of stuff to keep warm. The other part though is if, and then we've learned this, so if I look at the room temperature in my room on my Nest, let's say it's 71, but then it says it's under 71 71, like it's actually under 71, that means like it's not able to get the heat it needs to warm my room, which is also tied to the hot water heater, which means my shower cannot make a warm shower. If the gauge on my room is 70 or 71, and it's 71 right now, it means I'm gonna have a warm shower. If it's not, it means I have a freezing, freezing, freezing cold shower. And so anyway, for the last like 3 days, it's been below. So any of the other showers in our house are fine. So I have to go shower like in the kids' rooms, but my own shower won't. So anyway, that's kinda weird, but that's where we are at. Alright, so I wanna talk today about something that I'm probably gonna offend somebody, and if so, I really apologize. Well, I don't really apologize. I think it needs to be said. Alright, so this is my thought. I was asking someone the other day about like, they're trying to figure out like what to build and their passions and all that kind of stuff, and I was like, there's gotta be something you are crazy passionate about where you would just do it for free and like you can inspire others and it's just like, all your free time you're focusing you're sitting there and you're learning about it and reading and watching and trying to figure it out. And maybe I'm just the weird one, but I assume everyone is passionate about something, right? I assume that there's things you follow, right, that you're just obsessed with. For me, obviously marketing. I'm obsessed with it. I read every blog post, I listen to every podcast, I'm reading insane amounts of books and courses. I'm just obsessed with that concept. But that's not the only concept for me, right? There's a lot of other stuff. Right now, for a while it was like NLP. That became this passion. I was studying, I was learning, I was reading books and courses and CDs and consuming immersion of NLP. I had a time in my life where I was obsessed with selling. How do we sell and trial closes and tonality and all that. I became obsessed with the selling part of it for a while. Right now, I think one of my big passions is biohacking. What are all the weird, crazy, cool things I can do to get more out of my body? More energy, more focus, more weight loss, more happiness, more— Maybe I'm just insane. Right now, because I'm in this biohacking phase, we're building out this, we're in the process to be about to begin building out this huge biohacking room at our house which is gonna be insane. And I'm hoping that I finish it before I'm out of my biohacking phase. But as of right now I'm in it and I'm like neck deep and I'm obsessed and it's so much fun and it's so exciting and like every day there's like a fun new thing and I'm reading the blogs and the podcasts and I got, you know, we're starting a whole company based around it and just a whole bunch of really crazy cool things. So that's kinda what's happening, right? And I love it, I have so much fun with it. I just assume that everyone's got stuff like that. That. So I asked this guy, what are the things you're passionate about? And he really struggled trying to find it. Finally came back, he's like, you know what I'm really passionate about? Sports. I love watching football. And I was just like, oh man, like, like, I wanted to ask, like, how many hours a day do you watch football? How many hours a week do you watch football? And, and, and I don't even know where to go with this. Like, I just, I was just like, that's not like, that's I just don't, anyway, maybe it's just 'cause I'm not the kind of guy who likes to watch sports. I love being entertained. I love going to a 2-hour movie and watching it and getting entertained and then going back to, coming back to the real world and doing stuff again, right? Whereas it feels like with sports, especially football, it's like 4 hours you sit there and you watch other people live their dreams and you sit there and you don't. You know, and you talk about things that don't matter. And again, I know that some people, sports is their thing and it matters a lot to them and I get that. I'm a wrestler, right? I get passionate watching other people, I get that. But I think that a huge majority of people are just like wasting their life away watching sports, watching other people achieve their, their goals and their dreams and things like that. And again, like an average football game is 4 hours, and how many football games do you watch a week or weekend? My brother, I love him to death, but he watches football all the time. We're at his house and he He's a lot younger than me and he was, we were talking, he was talking about all these Super Bowls that happened before he was born that he'd already, he'd went back and watched like the videos of them. I'm like, dude, you watch videos from people that are like, from like, from before you're like, you wasted 4 hours of your time watching something that you could have just seen the score. Like you know the end outcome. Like you watched 4 hours of this thing and it was just like, ugh. And I see people watching golf and people watching baseball and people watching and, And it just doesn't make sense to me. You know, it's been interesting. Like, I love going to sporting things. Like, I went to the wrestling match with the kids the other day. You know, I like going to baseball. I like going to football games, like those things. But for me, it's a lot less of like going to watch a sport. The sport part's fun. Like, I get that. But it's like, it's the people, it's the atmosphere. I enjoy that part of it. But sitting down in front of the TV, pushing play while your wife and kids are doing amazing, you know, doing other things and you're just zoned out, like, it just makes me sick. Just think about how many hours are wasted. Like, they could be done with so many more productive things to help enhance you and your life and your family and people around you and people you could serve. You took that 4 hours a week, and that's assuming you're watching one game and not like 12. The 4 hours a week that you're watching a game and just use it to read a book or use it to read blog posts, I mean, for crying out loud, or just something. You can develop skills that can actually help other people, that could change the world in your little way. And so that's kind of my thought. I just feel like, you know, there's nothing inherently bad with sitting there and watching a football game. But I feel like you're— what does Garrett White say? Like you're sedating yourself so you don't have to deal with all the rest of the things. I've been to people's houses where I go over there and they're watching football and their wife or kids are in the other room doing stuff. And I think they're missing it. They're missing it. And so if your number one passion or hobby or talent is watching sports, man, I recommend deleting ESPN or ESPN2 or ESPN The Ocho or whatever you guys are watching. Like, turn it off. It's not that important. Have them text you the highlights of the game at the end. Watch the news, the recap for 3 minutes and they show you all the important plays that happened in the entire football game. Waste so much of your time and energy and talents on that. And so I don't know where I'm going with this. I think I just, you know, I'm very guarded of my time, like every minute of it, every waking minute, because I know that there's so much to do, there's so much that I want to become, and I feel like 4 hours or 3 hours or 1 hour, whatever sport you're in, like man, like that's a big sacrifice. You know, if you're billing your time like that, if that 4-hour period of time is not making you at least $5,000 an hour, if you're not making $20,000 from there, man, there are way better ways to spend that time. And so I just encourage you guys to turn off the TV, stop watching sports. Watch the highlights, I'll allow you to do that, 'cause I even like the highlights. Even sports I don't like, it's still fun. Like golfing, like I will never watch golf or baseball or pretty much any sport, to be honest. But I love watching the highlights, right? 'Cause you can see like the one cool thing that happened in that 4 hours. Like that's, I get that. So I give you permission to watch the highlights, but turn the darn TV off, pay attention to your wife, your spouse, and it's time to cultivate a hobby or a talent that isn't involved watching other people succeed. It's around you helping and serving and changing somebody's life. And so think about like what aspect of your life are you passionate about? Okay, is it financial? Is it health? Is it business? Is it, Is it recreational? Is it home building? Is it gardening? Is it like whatever? I don't care what it is, but pick something and let's start doing that. Because first off, when you start doing it, you're going to become a better person yourself. Like, I don't know anyone that becomes a better person watching 4 hours of football. Like, it doesn't happen, right? Maybe you know the people, players' names better, or you can guess the scores, or you can like cheer for people, but it doesn't make you a better person at all. Like, it— I almost feel like it's It's the second you turn the TV on, like your progress in life starts like moving backwards. I feel like we're always either moving forward or backwards. I feel like the second you push play on ESPN, you start moving backwards because you're no longer contributing, you're just being entertained. And that's all it is, it's like a movie, that's it, you guys, there's no other, anyway, there you go. So I'm sure I pissed off all the people who love sports, but I care more about you and about what you can become and who you can serve. And so Strumpf TV, let's find a passion, let's find a hobby, something that first off is going to better your own life, and second off, you can use that to better other people's lives. And that's the secret spot where you're going to find a business, you guys. And if you're not passionate about something yet, it's time to go. Turn off the TV, go to Barnes Noble, lock yourself in there, and then walk around, read every book until you— like, read the first chapter of a different book in every single section. And the book that you're not able to put down That's the one. Go buy it and go start consuming it, and then go buy all the other books around that topic. And that's how, that's how you should begin your journey. So turn off the TV, go get a book. That's it for today, guys. I'm gonna go in there and get back to work on writing a book. So book number 2 is actually— first draft is done, and we're working on getting it all done. Hopefully have the first printed draft live at the at the Funnel Hacking event. So I'm excited. Appreciate y'all. Have a great day and I'll talk to you guys soon.
