Why I Did This Podcast For 3 Years When No One Was Listening
14 Mar 2016 · 8 min
In this solo monologue, Russell Brunson explains why he continued producing the "Marketing in Your Car" podcast for three years even though he never knew how many people were listening. He chose a car‑based, short‑format show because it required minimal setup and fit into his daily driving routine, making it easy to stay consistent. Brunson describes the podcast as therapeutic, a way to get ideas out of his head, and a low‑effort method of sharing thoughts without the logistics of interview shows. He admits he never tracked downloads or reviews, deliberately avoiding metrics that could become excuses for stopping. Over time, he observed a compounding, long‑tail effect: a few listeners would discover an episode, binge the back catalog, and eventually become high‑value fans who joined his Inner Circle and higher‑ticket programs. He uses this experience to advise creators to focus on consistent output rather than early numbers, trusting that the internet’s evergreen nature will eventually reward the effort. Brunson also plugs related resources—marketingyourcar.com for email updates and transcripts, and the nightly Periscope Marketing Quickie Show—encouraging listeners to stay engaged across platforms.

Hey everyone, this is Russell Brunson, and you're right, you know what's about to happen. I'm about to welcome you to Marketing in Your Car. Welcome to the Marketing in Your Car podcast, where you can increase your traffic, conversions, and sales in just 10 minutes a day. And now, here's your host, Russell Brunson. Alright everybody, hope you guys are doing good. I just went shopping for some clothes for the Funnel Hacking Live event because I only have like 8 shirts and I do a lot of videos and I've done a lot of events and I noticed recently I was watching some promo videos from last year's event and all the shirts I was probably gonna wear to the event were the same ones I wore last year and I'm like, crap, I've gotta get new shirts because most people can get away with the same shirts twice or 3 times or 12 times. I can't because they're then on video, on promo videos for forever. Yeah, so I just got some new clothes, which clothes shopping is not my favorite thing. Now I'm driving home to go play with my kids, and that is my favorite thing, so it's all good. But I'm just having a thought for you guys I want to share. I think it's interesting. It has to do with this podcast, with Marketing in Your Car. People, when I first started it, it was funny. People were like, "How are you monetizing it?" I was like, "I'm not." "How many people are listening?" I was like, "I don't even know." I still honestly don't even know how to check how many listeners we have. I assume we've got a few, 'cause people keep telling me, but I don't even know how to check how many listeners we have. I don't really care. I don't know how many downloads. I don't know how many reviews. Every once in a while I look at reviews, which is kind of exciting, but I don't even know that they're happening. All I knew is that when I decided to start a podcast, I knew that if it wasn't something easy, I would never do it, right? I've got a lot of friends who do interview podcasts, and they're hard to keep up with 'cause you gotta find someone to interview, you gotta find the right time, you gotta interview, all these things, right? And I was like, if I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it while in a spot that I can consistently do it all the time. Time, which is when I'm driving, which is how it got the name Marketing in Your Car, which probably has hurt me 'cause there's way cooler names that probably would've got more people in, but for those of you guys who are like faithful Marketing in Your Car people, like, it's cool, right? And so, but yeah, I had basically no strategy other than I just, I knew I needed to do it consistently and so I was gonna do it, and I didn't even like so much have like a, not so much a topic, but it wasn't like, okay, first I'm gonna teach this, then I'm gonna teach this, then I'm gonna teach this. It was more just like, I'm just gonna share what's going on in my head 'cause I have all these things in my head And there's something magical about getting things out of your head. And I'm not that good at communicating with people, I don't think. You could ask my team that, they'd probably agree. Or maybe my wife. I'm not the greatest communicator one-on-one sometimes. 'Cause I just assume people know what I'm talking about. And on this, I assume that the microphone has no idea what I'm talking about, so I can just talk and share and give, and it's just easy, right? So that's why I kinda did it. And so I think it was more therapeutic for me. In fact, it's funny, I find myself doing these a lot of times because for me, It helps. Again, I don't even know how many of you guys are listening to these, but I do know some are. That's why I wanted to talk about today is that some of you guys are listening and it's been interesting watching. My guess is, I think we just passed 3 years of doing this. My guess is the first year I would probably get on average maybe 50 or 60 listens per episode, if even that. Small group of people, right? Most people, including myself, and that's obviously one big reason why I haven't looked at numbers. A number, sometimes I'm like, oh, it's not that big of a deal, so I just stopped doing it. And I didn't want to know 'cause I didn't want to have an excuse of like, oh, I'm just gonna not do this 'cause not enough people and whatever. I just wanted to do this and just do it, right? And so I do it, I keep doing it, keep doing it. And what's interesting is this exponential effect that's been happening with this podcast, which is kinda cool. And some of you guys know what I'm talking about, and I'm curious if you're one of these people, come let me know. Come to the Funnel Hacking event and tell me. But basically, people will hear about me somewhere, right? Or someone will mention the podcast or whatever. And then someone will come and listen to an episode. And because it's not like an hour-long episode and you get all sucked into it and all these things, it's short and fast and kind of, you know, I share like one idea or one thought. People listen to it, they consume it, and as long as they don't listen to one of my dumb episodes that was completely useless, and I have had a few, I'm not gonna lie. But if there's one that they relate to, then what happens, it's interesting, is that then they start at the beginning and then they plow through all of them. Which, if you listen to all of them, it's like, It's like hundreds of hours, I think. Maybe 100 hours, I don't know. It's not a little time. I've been driving this car a lot, right? It adds up. It's probably, I don't know, 40, 50, 60 hours that people listen to. And then I get people all the time that come to me, and usually it's people that join my Inner Circle program or higher-level things, and they say, Russell, I didn't know who you were. 6 months ago, so-and-so told me about this. I listened to it. Then I went on a marketing card binge. For the next 2 weeks, all I listened to was you every single day for hours at a time, and now, And now I'm in your inner circle. And I think it's so cool. Oh, there's somebody at the door selling my wife something as I'm pulling in. Oh great. I'm about to have to go yell at the solicitor. Anyway, I'm home now. But anyway, I just think it's interesting. So I think what I want to tell you guys is that if you're thinking about podcasting or blogging or whatever you're doing, don't worry about the numbers because what happens is this compounding effect where someday as it's grown, somebody will come into your world. They will read or listen or follow something you said and they will become a fan. And they will go through and they will consume insane amounts of your content that you don't think anyone would ever do, but they will. And next thing they know, they will become, like I said, a fan and they'll buy everything. That's what's happening. So it's been kind of a cool effect. So for those of you guys who have done that so far, thank you. Thanks for coming in, thanks for going on an immersion program and going through all the marketing your cars. Thanks for then, a lot of you guys sending up, hanging out inner circles, things like that, coming to events, using our stuff. It's been a cool compounding effect. And I always can tell, I feel like my best— I don't know what you call them, not customers, my best clients isn't good to read either, students, I don't know. My best people, my best peeps are the Marketing Your Car people. And so that's why I keep doing it. And again, I still don't know how many people are listening, and I don't even care. All I care is the fact that you're listening, and that's why I keep on doing what I'm doing. So hope you guys enjoy that. And hope it gives you some hope and some faith, because maybe 3 years down the road, you'll start getting tons of people joining your inner circles and your $25K programs, all sorts of things, because of the work you did today and the work you do tomorrow. Because this is a compounding effect. And thanks to the interwebs and the internet, these things stick and they last for a long, long time. And my guess is long after I have passed on from this earth and I'm no longer here, hopefully people keep listening to these and get value from them. And that would be my goal. So, that's it for today. I'm done, heading home, go play with the kids. I will talk to you guys all again soon. Hey everyone, this is Russell Brunson again.
