Russell Brunson watches his kids yell YOLO while jumping in and out of a hot tub during a snowstorm, then uses it as a lesson about entrepreneurship: when inspiration hits, your inner critic floods in with doubt, but shouting YOLO and acting immediately bypasses the fear.

Welcome to Marketing in Your Car, the podcast for funnel hackers everywhere. You're now part of a small group of underground entrepreneurs who are trying to change the world through the products and the services that we believe in. But because we don't rely on venture capitalists, we don't have financial safety nets. So we have to do things differently. We have to do things smarter. We do that through an art and a science we call funnel hacking. This podcast will give you a glimpse at the daily life of a funnel hacker. So let's get started. Hey everyone, this is Russell Brunson. Welcome back to Marketing Your Car. Today I'm actually sitting in my kitchen, the kitchen that all the wood is completely warped from our flood. All my wife and kids are on the hot tub except for Nora, who decided she didn't want a hot tub, so we are standing here. And I'm supposed to be feeding her dinner because she's hungry, but instead she's eating a popsicle. So that is called good parenting because it's the only way to get her to stop crying. So Yes, I should teach a parenting course someday. If your kids are crying, just give them a popsicle. It helps. Oh man, some days it's really hard to be a parent, but, um, those days you just give them popsicle and it comes easy again. Just kidding. All right, parenting advice aside, because nobody wants that right now, but I do want to talk about something really super cool, um, because we're in the hot tub. So it's been snowing, like Boise's been Boise snowpocalypse or whatever you want to call it, where The last week we've had like 3 or 4 feet of snow, and then it rained another foot, and like everything's soaked, and our house is flooding. And like, oh, today we were filming a testimonial video in my front room, and I walked in the carpet, and the carpet's soaking wet, and I looked at the wall, and there's like water seeping behind the paint of our wall. Anyway, it's a total disaster, a nightmare, not gonna lie. But, uh, the one nice thing is the hot tub's good no matter what. So we're on the hot tub in the snow, and we pretty much hot tub every day. And we had our 5 snow days in a row, so pretty much probably almost 10 days in a row, 'cause between Christmas break and then this and then everything, we've been hot tubbing a lot. And it's been fun 'cause the hot tub is like surrounded by tons and tons and tons of snow. And so the first day you hot tub, you know, everyone's like, ooh, it's so cold, and they'll go touch the snow a little bit and they try little things and take little snowballs and throw them at each other and they dive back in the water. And then to now where it's insane where they do these things. And this is kind of the point of today's message. So I was out there today with the kids and they were jumping up and they're screaming and they're running around our house, which is a pretty long distance in the snow. And first they're doing 1 lap and then 2 and then 3, now they're doing 4 laps around the house and they dive back in the water. And then they're doing snow angels front and back and then back in the water. And then they're running across the yard onto the trampoline, doing snow angels on the trampoline, jumping, then run back and dive in, like all these crazy things. Like stuff that's super painful, super crazy, yet they just keep doing them over and over again. But what's interesting, and this is the point, before they go every single time, they're like, hey, let's do it. And then they're all like, but it's so cold. And then Dallin, I think Dallin started this, he's the one who always says YOLO and he jumps up and he takes off. It's like everyone's freezing, you know, everyone wants to get in this cold snow. And Darren goes, YOLO, jumps up, steps in the snow, and then sprints probably, I don't know, 500 yards in the snow around our house a bunch of times and dives in back in, right? I was like, what do you— like, when you're yelling, like, what are you yelling out? He said, YOLO. And I was like, what does YOLO mean? He said, you only live once. And then he goes, YOLO, and jumps up, takes off, and runs out in the snow again. And First I was kind of laughing, I was like, actually said, you only live once, and they said suspend it stupidly or live it stupidly or something like that, I don't know what it was, and then he takes off, right? And so now all the kids, every time they're about to do something crazy that they normally wouldn't do, they look at that challenge, like, hey, run across the snow, do a snow angel front, snow angel back, 3 somersaults in the snow, you know, and then run back and dive in. They sit there and, you know that when you want to do something cool, like there's that moment of like, huh, I can't do that. And the second that moment comes to them, they yell YOLO, and then boom, they just go. And I was like, how cool is that? Like, this is way harder, what they're doing, than what we're trying to do in business every day, right? Yet we come up with this plan and this idea and this obstacle, and we're like, hey, here's what we're gonna do. And all of a sudden, your brain starts talking to you. Your brain's like, you can't do that. Like, you're Russell Brunson, you barely graduated high school. Like, you're super awkward. Like, when you talk to people one-on-one, you can't even talk to people. Like, all these things start flooding into your mind, right? And what happens to most of us is we sit there like, man, you're right, I am just Russell Brunson. Man, you're right, I'm really not that good, I barely graduated from school. Yeah, when I get in a group talking one-on-one with people, I have no, I feel awkward, I don't even know what to say most of the time. And all these thoughts keep flooding your head and if you listen to them long enough, you start believing them and then you have so much fear and anxiety, whatever things up, you just don't take that action, right? And I think what's interesting here is that they're flooding their mind with like, as soon as those things start coming up, yolo, boom, and they're gone, they just take off and they go. I think for all of us, like, we need it. Like, if we start doing that, think how powerful that would be. If just every time something, something comes to us, like an idea, like when we have that idea, that inspiration. And I think those inspirations aren't just from like our brains. Like, I wish that I was that smart, but I don't think it is. I think it's, I think it's coming from on high. I think that, and you can call it whatever you want it, for me it's my Heavenly Father. I think these are inspirations we get from him. They're like, hey, you should try this thing. Hey, you should go take this leap of faith. Hey, you should go talk to this person. Hey, you should create this. Hey, you should test it. Like, whatever those things are, right? Those are gifts that we're getting, and it's like, hey, go do it. But then all the fear and self-doubt, everything comes in, it stops us most of the times. I think that if we start becoming like my insane kids are, and the second you have the idea and you know it's right, because you know it pretty quick, right? Like, should I do this? Yes, I should. Oh, but As soon as that— right before that buck comes off, yell out the top of your lungs if you're in a spot where you can. If not, say in your head as loud as you can, say YOLO. Y-O-L-O. You only live once. YOLO. And just boom, and then go and just run. Just sprint. Don't even think, because once that inspiration's come to you, it's there. And if you believe like I do, it was given to you from a higher power, whatever that might be for you, then your hesitation to that is— and I believe in an adversary, right? There's God and there's the opposite side of that. There's Satan or whatever you want to call it, right? That takes— tries to take things from us, right? So as soon as you have like this inspiration, like, well, this is what I need to do, the adversary's gonna come and start self-doubt, like boom, boom, boom, try to keep you from doing that thing that could change your life, could change other people's lives. And so I think one of the most powerful things we can do is yell out YOLO the second we get inspiration and then start running. And just sprint. Ellie just walked in. I'm gonna ask her. Hey Ellie, what does YOLO mean to you guys when you say YOLO and start running in the snow?
I don't know.
You don't know? What does it stand for?
Um, I can't remember.
You know.
Wait, um, um, um, you will only live once.
And then, um, tell us some of the crazy things you guys are doing after you yell YOLO.
Um, we were walking in the snow What's that?
She's being all shy now. Let me ask Bone. Bone just came in. Hey buddy, what does YOLO mean to you?
You only live once.
And so what are the things you do when you say YOLO? Then what do you do?
Talon says, uh, spend it like you only have one life, so spend it superly. He's making me consider that today. You actually told me what it was. I'm like, oh, I don't do that much.
And what do you do when you say YOLO? Then what kind of crazy things are you doing?
Jump in snow, ankles hurt to death. It's fun.
How many times did you run around the house?
Uh, 5 times.
5 times?
When my cousins were here.
Um, um, um.
So that was before the ice rink. I went 2 times around the house.
Twice? So does YOLO help you to not freak out when it gets cold, or what does it help you do?
It kills you.
Oh, kills you. So YOLO is a challenge. Anyway, so there it is from the mouth of kids. So anyway, that's what I want to recommend for you guys. Start thinking about that. Think about YOLO. When you get that inspiration, you know it's right, before the self-doubt, the adversary, whatever it is that you're thinking, whatever it is, I don't care, the things that pop in your head about why you can't and you shouldn't and you're probably not worthy to do it or whatever those things pop up, just shout YOLO at the top of your lungs and start running. And that's That's the key. And it hurts, right? Why don't you hear that? So tell them it hurts, right?
Yeah, it hurts. I get tons of scratches. It was before the acid rain, so that's why it wasn't—
it's before the acid rain. But was it worth it?
No, like running around the house, it was softer.
That was before the, the snow hardened. It was more worth it? Yeah. At least it was worth it though, right? So you only live once, you might as well do it. Otherwise, think if you didn't do it, would you regret it? Yeah, you'd regret it.
I'd still be running around the house if the snow wasn't that hard. I mean, it would be a lot more fun.
Would you regret if you said— if you didn't say YOLO and you sat in the hot tub and didn't do it, would you regret it?
Yeah, because I'd be burning to death.
Plus your life would be boring. Would your life be boring if you just did nothing and you just sat there the whole time? All right, they're being goofy now. All right, so YOLO, you guys. That is the message for the day. Tattoo it on your forehead, on your hand, on your T-shirt, no tattoos though. Temporary tattoos?
Yes.
Okay, you can do temporary tattoos. Anyway, or Ellie said permanent marker. Not permanent marker, just a marker you can do it with. I don't know if you heard Ellie said if you take a shower to wash off, so you can do it with that. Anyway, the key though is when the self-doubt comes after the inspiration hits and self-doubt comes, YOLO, run. Get out of the hot tub and start running before your brain can talk you out of it because 'Cause it will if you're not careful. So YOLO, there you go guys. Appreciate y'all, have a great day. Talk to you guys again soon. Cheers! Thanks so much for listening. We hope you enjoyed the behind the scenes look at our funnel hacking projects.
