Why You Should Make More Mistakes - Kevin Ward

Kevin Ray Ward argues that deliberate mistakes outside your comfort zone build decisiveness, force action, and accelerate learning through real feedback. He's clear this means calculated risks, not careless or unethical errors.

Hi there. It's Kevin Award with yes Masters Real Estate Success Training, helping you get more yeses and more successes in your business and in your life. And today I want to talk to you about one of the most powerful secrets to success, one of the keys to success, and that is very simply this and that is learning how to make more mistakes. I know, I know, it doesn't feel right, does it? But if you want to be successful, I'm going to talk to you today about why you should make more mistakes. Everywhere you go, every day. If you get out there and make more mistakes, it's just. It makes a huge difference. Now, everything in us, when we hear that, we think about making mistakes subconsciously. Everything in us just, no, I can't stand the thought of making mistakes. It's like total failure. The worst possible thing that could happen, right? And the reason that's the case is because ever since we started preschool, ever since we started kindergarten or first grade or whenever it was, the first time you took a test, the first time you got a report card, what did you begin to learn? Well, our education system simply programs us that the worst possible thing that you can do on any test, on any assignment, on anything in school is make a mistake. And we are taught from the time we're very young to avoid mistakes like the plague. Please keep them away from me. No mistakes here. I don't want to be a failure. And we equate making mistakes with being a failure. In fact, I remember when I was a freshman in college, one of my favorite professors, he used to tell a story about a young college guy that just graduated from college and just got his first job at kind of his dream company. And one day he had a chance to talk to the president of the company, and he told the President, he said, Mr. President, someday I want to be president of this company or a company like this. How do you go about becoming the president of a company? And the president looked at him with just very reassuring and said, you just got to make good decisions. And the young guy said, well, how do you make good decisions? And the president said, experience. And the young guy said, well, how do you get experience? And the president said, bad decisions. That's it. How do you get good at being anything? You got to make mistakes. You got to mess up. When you make bad decisions, when you make mistakes, there's something very powerful that happens. So again, I want to talk to you today about why you should make more mistakes, why you should screw up more. Now, let me quote, qualify that by saying, I'm not talking about stupid decisions, I'm not talking about being an idiot for if you're a real estate agent. I'm not talking about not paying attention. I'm not talking about carelessness. I'm not talking about taking legal risks by breaking the law or doing something unethical or illegal. I'm not talking about those kind of mistakes. I'm talking about mistakes of putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, of doing something that scares you a little bit, of doing something that's like, what if I try it and it fails? It may be calling somebody, it may be calling a potential seller, seller, a lead that may be a 2 or 3 million dollar listing, it may be a high end property and you're afraid to call them and you're like, well what if I try it and it doesn't work? Or maybe you have a script and you're like, if I try that, what if it doesn't work? And we're afraid of messing up, we're afraid of making a mistake. So I'm talking about the mistakes of putting yourself out there, taking a risk, a logical risk that I would see as stretches your comfort zone or where you know that failure is a real possibility. That after all that's how you learn, it's how you grow. So why is making mistakes so important to our growth and so important to our success? Well, there are three reasons that I want to share with you real quickly why making mistakes is a critical part of the pathway to massive success. Number one is because when you are making mistakes, it means that you are being, that you are being decisive, that you are doing something that requires you to make a decision. See, a lot of people, they never get off the starting line because they're still not sure. And it's kind of like, well, I could do it this way or I could do it this way, but if I do it this way, it could go wrong like this. If I try this way, well that might mess up. And so we're looking at different alternatives and different choices and we're going like, oh no, I could mess up this way or I could mess up this way. And so instead, instead of saying, okay, well this one looks like the best route, I'm going to go that way. We just sit there and we just, we're like, we straddle the fence, we just can't get. We never take initiative to make the decision of I'm going to go this way. Pass or fail, win or lose. I'm not going to just sit here as Wayne Gretzky, the famous NHL hockey player, always said, he said, you miss 100% of the shots. You don't. So just that act of making a decision and saying, I'm going to do this way, and then second is. The second thing is making mistakes means that you are taking the action, that you're actually doing something, that you're being decisive, which means I'm making the mental decision or the mental commitment to take action, and then I'm actually following up and taking that action. And when you're doing that, you're putting yourself out there. You say, well, what if I miss? What? What if I mess up? What if I make a mistake? What if I lose? What if it's a bad decision? Well, here's the deal. No decision is the ultimate biggest mistake because you got no chance, right? I mean, it's just like, again, it's like you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I mean, how many of you have. How many people have ever gotten a date with the guy or gal of their dreams by not asking them out? Well, they may say no to me, right? But if you don't ask them, they're definitely never going to say yes to you. So you got to be decisive. You got to take action. And then what happens is something very beautiful is you either succeed or you fail. It either works or it doesn't work, but either way, the biggest advantage, the edge that you get from making more mistakes is that because you're out there and willing to take a chance and you're willing to make the mistakes, you're going to learn faster than those who don't take action than those who aren't decisive. You're going to learn faster, grow faster, progress more quickly. Just because you're in the game, you're out there running the ball. You're taking the chances, you're taking the opportunities, you're engaging those opportunities and you're moving forward. And if you mess up, you get knocked down, you jump right back up and you keep going again. Such a critical and powerful key to our success is getting over the programming in our brain that making mistakes is bad. Now, being careless, not paying attention, not getting educated, not learning, trying to do everything on your own or reinvent the wheel. There's a lot of mistakes that you can avoid by paying attention and learning and growing and getting the right coach or getting the right training or getting yourself educated. But too often, we spend too much time in the huddle, too much time thinking about it, too much time trying to wait for the perfect moment when we should just be out there making a decision, taking action and then looking at it and say, did that work or not? Well, if it did, great, let's do more of it. If it didn't work, what can I change? How should I adjust? How should I do it different next time? And then just repeating that cycle, going out there, making a decision, taking action. And as long as you're in the game and you're taking that action, making those decisions, making mistakes, making victories, either way you're going to learn faster, grow faster, and you're going to get ahead way more faster.
