JP Morgan Just Backed the $2 Trillion a Day Network Going Onchain

Major banks including JP Morgan, Bank of America, and Citibank backed a Clearinghouse project to tokenize commercial bank money and connect it to blockchain. The initiative aims for 24/7 settlement and automated workflows, essentially bringing stablecoin-like efficiency to traditional payment systems like RTP and CHIPS.

JP Morgan, Citibank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and other banking giants just backed a crypto on-chain money project. This is when banks stop mocking stablecoins and they actually start copying the efficiencies and the rails. Because on June 5th, 2026, the Clearinghouse announced the bank-led initiative. Now, that's important because the Clearinghouse is not some random crypto startup. It's owned by 25 of the largest financial institutions in the United States, and it says its network clears more than $2 trillion per day. Okay, that is not a joke. It also runs critical payment rails like RTP, CHIPS, and one of the major US systems for large value dollar payments. Now you need to listen to what they're building. The initiative will connect on-chain activity with traditional payment rails and enable clearing and settlement of tokenized commercial bank money at scale. That means that normal bank deposits represented on blockchain-style systems— in plain English, banks want their own version of digital dollars that that can move on-chain while still sitting inside of a regulated banking framework. The system is supposed to support automated workflows, richer transaction data, and of course, 24/7 settlement. It also creates a connection between blockchain activity and existing fiat rails like RTP and CHIPS. That's the whole battle. Stablecoins proved that dollars can move faster on blockchains. Banks saw it, and now they're trying to copy the speed, programmability, and interoperability completely. But they want to keep the deposits, customer relationships, and settlement certainty inside of the banking system. Now, I need you to understand the names supporting it. We have Bank of America, BNY, Citibank, HSBC, JP Morgan Payments, Santander, US Bank, Wells Fargo, and many others. Citi's quote was specifically revealing. They said tokenized securities are rapidly gaining momentum. In normal terms, That means more stocks, bonds, and other financial assets are being represented as crypto tokens. Citi also said banks need clearing infrastructure for both traditional deposits and tokenized deposits. And that is the connection. If stocks and bonds become tokenized, the cash side has to modernize too. You cannot have 24/7 tokenized assets settling against 9-to-5 bank money forever. So the banks are building a bridge. And for crypto investors, this is the part that matters the most if you're making money off crypto. Even if tokenized deposits compete with stablecoins, they validate on the blockchain model. They prove programmable money is becoming institutional infrastructure that can actually increase demand for custody, identity, wallet technology, compliance networks, oracle data, settlement chains, and their public or private network institutions can connect to it if they want to. So the surface story is banks are fighting stablecoins, but the real story is banks just admitted stablecoins were right and are adopting it rapidly. This is a gold rush.
