Alexander Lorenzo explains why Wall Street wants tokenized stocks: not for 24/7 trading, but to use them as programmable collateral for margin lending and DeFi borrowing. Kraken already offers margin trading of tokenized stocks, and Venus lets traders use Tesla and Nvidia tokens as collateral. The real prize is a $4.6 trillion opportunity to connect crypto infrastructure with traditional finance.

So supposedly there's a hidden leverage layer under tokenized stocks. Once stocks become tokens, they can move margin lending, stablecoin borrowing, and 24/7 collateral workflows. This is where it gets real. The real power of tokenized stocks is not just trading Apple at midnight. The real power is actually the collateral. That means it could potentially be used for margin lending, borrowing stablecoins, or even moving collateral between platforms without selling the underlying exposure. We've already seen an early version of this. Kraken supports X stocks margin trading for eligible non-US users. Its own materials say that users can go long or short on tokenized stocks and ETFs, access up to 3x leverage, and trade without selling spot crypto holdings because existing balances can serve as automatic collateral. That's one of the models. The second model is tokenized stocks becoming collateral inside of DeFi lending. Venus added B stocks Support markets for Tesla, Nvidia, SpaceX-linked exposure on BNB Chain. The reported collateral factors were 60% for Tesla, 60% for Nvidia, and 50% for SpaceX-linked assets, with borrowing paused at launch. The last part matters. They are testing the collateral layer before turning on full borrowing risk. This is the right way to think about adoption as an investor. The first wave is tokenized stock trading. The second wave is tokenized stock financing. That second wave is where the money gets more serious because collateral creates borrowing power. If a holder can deposit tokenized Nvidia and borrow USDC, they do not need to sell the equity exposure to access the liquidity. Do you understand what that means? This is exactly why Wall Street cares about collateral mobility. Traditional finance has already had margin lending and securities lending, but it sits inside of brokers, custodians, clearing systems, and market hour infrastructure. Crypto rails make the asset programmable. That creates a path towards 24/7 collateral movement and instant risk management. The crypto asset connection is direct. If tokenized stocks become accepted collateral, then demand can grow for stablecoins, lending protocols, oracle networks, risk engines, custody systems, and the blockchains that host the assets themselves. It can also increase the value of networks that handle compliant asset transfers, fast settlement, and institutional risk controls. And the caveat is important. This is early and the risk is real. A tokenized stock wrapper depends on custody, pricing redemption, trading liquidity, and legal rights. If those break, the collateral value can break too. But this is why it's such a big story. Tokenized stocks are not just becoming something to trade. They're becoming something the financial system can actually borrow against with crypto DeFi. That's when crypto rails start touching the balance sheet of the biggest people on the face of the planet. They all want cash.
