The Hidden Internet System No One Ever Told You About

The internet runs on three layers: physical cables and towers that carry all data, the TCP/IP system that breaks information into packets, and the apps you actually use. Understanding this structure shows what Web 3.0 might build on top of.

So let's talk about Web 2.0, because a lot of people, they're not going to understand what Web 3.0 means if you don't understand how it currently works, right? So right now there's a physical element to the internet. What do I mean by that? So there's fiber optic cables and it's literally connected throughout the world. There's literal connections, like physical connections through networking devices, towers, fiber optics, cables. There's, there's like a physicalness too. I don't know if you guys knew that. A lot of people don't know that, but that's how it currently works. Through your internet service provider or whatever the case is, right? So this is the physical layer. And cryptocurrency is on that physical layer as well. And then it brings us to the next one. And I want to use Zora as an example because it's been our hottest topic. As you guys know, we've been talking about the coins and things like that. But it's not specifically Zora. That's just an example, just to be clear with you guys. So there's a data layer. So when we talk about the actual internet right now, like what you currently experience— forget blockchain for a second— that it has a data layer. So it's TCP or whatever the case is, but basically there's these little individual packets that are transferred. So let's say hypothetically I want to send a picture on Instagram. When I send the picture on Instagram, what happens is it gets compressed into a small packet, right? And then information is sent to whatever destination, and then the post is put And there's these small packets, it gets compressed, it gets sent, and then it gets opened. Compressed, sent, opened. And it's basically packets of information. This is called the data layer. This is how the internet works. And then we have the application layer, right? And so the application layer is essentially the websites and the apps on your phone. Think about it for a second. Everything you currently use is either through a browser or an app. Think about your computer. That's the physical device. Computer, it's an app or a browser, right? App or a browser. That's pretty much it.
