Jonathan Swanson saw Mint succeed and realized local services was a bigger market than he'd thought. His team wanted to make hiring a plumber or contractor as easy as buying something on Amazon. They built Thumbtack with early ambition and naïve confidence.

Some of you may have heard of Mint. We had been thinking about this for a couple of months and we saw that thing launch and we're like, whoa, they've nailed it. We went back to the drawing board and fortunate for us, we came back to this idea of local services, which turned out to be a 10x bigger idea. And the motivation there was Amazon's making it trivially easy to buy any product, and the same should be true of any service. We were ambitious and naive and just jumped in and started working on it.
