Serving all of San Diego, this is your Fox 5 News. We're going to make this 2011, coming up, our best year ever. Allison Maslin's with us. She's the author of Blast Off. She's here with five tips to make the new year your most successful and fulfilling. I want to ask you something. I'm getting mixed results from people because I say, how was 2010? And we asked people yesterday and they tweeted us back and said, lousy. I'm going to let economy and things like that. Was it a good year for you?
You know what? I think it was my best year yet.
Well, I knew she'd say that it.
Was, except for the year that I got married to my husband. But last year was amazing because my book came out, it hit number one. I traveled across the country and helped a lot of people reach their dreams.
And how do you make it 2011? How do you make it the best year ever? What's. What's the main main?
Well, you know, people get all excited, gung ho at the New Year's. They have all these dre that they want to fulfill, and they have the best intentions. They go out gung ho. Then three to four weeks pass and those old habits creep in, and then those aspirations are out the window. So I have five tips that if you really follow clearly, you can't help but create a fulfilling and successful year. The first is to really get in touch with your true calling. You know, a lot of people jump out after the first thing that's going to make them a lot of money. They get all excited, but it fizzles out because they don't have the passion behind it, doesn't have meaning to them on a deeper level. And when you can connect with that, you're going to give it the effort, the energy, the drive that it needs to succeed. And what I help people do is to find their calling. And one of the exercises I have in my book, Blast off is I have them make four lists. The first is, what's your talents? What are you good at? What did you love doing as a kid that made you so happy? What have you always wanted to do but never tried before? And then the last is, where do you shine? Where are you? Just in the flow, in the zone, your gift that comes natural to you. And you begin to see a theme when you look at this list. For instance, I had a client that everything was about fitness and being very active. And she loved working with kids. So I helped her develop a business called Life Fitness for Me. And she's helping women, prenatal women, and children get fit. So that's a perfect example of matching your true calling with a new career.
But you gotta be able to make a living too. People are listening to you. Yeah, but I still got to keep my job going. How do you possibly find that point, find that true calling and make it work?
Well, this is my next. My next tip. You have to think big. You don't want to limit yourself. When you say think big, all of a sudden your mind opens, you get expansive, and those fears and those obstacles get out of the way. For instance, I wanted to develop a software. I wanted to find a software to work with my coaching clients to help them stay on track with their goals. And everything I found was complic. Boring. So because I was thinking big, the idea came in like, you know what? I'm going to develop my own. And if I was thinking small, I would think, oh, nobody would want that. I could never do this. I don't understand technology. But I was thinking big. I said, I'll find someone to help me develop it. And now my software, Blastation, is being used in 20 countries around the world. So you really have to give yourself the opportunity just to totally go for it.
Blastation is a cd, and then the next thing we get to making decisions, decisions from the choice and not from fear.
Exactly.
That's hard to do.
I know it is. And you know, how many times have you stayed in a situation or made a decision out of fear? I know I have stayed in a relationship too long. Because you're afraid that you can't find something better. Stayed in a career that you were unhappy in because you were afraid that you couldn't find something with more opportunity. But when you come from true choice, you're really following your gut instinct. And even Donald Trump says, you know, if you follow your gut instinct, you might have to go against the tide, but you're going to be ahead of the game. So it's really getting in touch with what is it that you want to create in your life. And then you just have to go after it.
And you can't tiptoe into it, I guess.
No, you can't. You've got to jump in with both feet. When you people say, I'm just going to test the waters, but what happens is, is that you're not full on, you're not wholeheartedly into it. You can't sort of dive off of a diving board, right? What happens, you do a big belly flop. You have to really put your whole heart and not go in hoping not to fail. You've got to go in expecting to.
Succeed, but your friends and family are going to laugh at you. They're going to say, why are you doing this? Right.
Right. And that happens all the time when people make big changes in their life. It's happened to many of my clients and even myself. But what I tell people is keep your head focused on your goal. Walk towards it every single day and don't let anyone tell you that it can't be done.
And get rid of the ones who say it can't be done. Just find people who say, yeah, yeah, I'll do this.
Right. Because you know what? They're not going to bed worrying you. You know, they're worrying about themselves. You've got to take care of yourself.
