Yes, that's right, Mark. If you're unsatisfied with your career, why not just make a change? Life and business coach Alison Maslin joining us today. And we're talking about four steps to making a change in your career and kind of why this is possible for so many people. So thank you for coming.
Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here.
Tell me about your background first and some of your accomplishments that really kind of solidify you as a life and business coach.
Well, I started my first business when I was 19 years old in college, and since then I have built nine more. So I've had 10 businesses, and I'm definitely one that likes to reinvent themselves. Right. And so now my passion is helping other people find their dreams and put it out into the world.
So how do people do this? And why would someone want to do this? Is it just not satisfied at their job, want to do something else? Kind of have that itch to do something else or what do you think it is?
Well, you know, a lot of times in college, they don't necessarily teach us how to find our passion. And maybe we don't know what to do or we pick something that we feel is going to make us a lot of money or our parents told us to do, and then we wake up 10 years, 20 years, 30 years later and say, I'm not happy. Or, you know, maybe it's the empty nest. Your children have moved on and now, wow, it's about me. So this is my time. Or maybe you just want to change. You know, it used to be we had one career our entire life that's, you know, our parents generation. But it's different now. And it's really, especially now with so many opportunities out there with the Internet, there's more entrepreneurs now than ever before.
I like the idea that it's never too late to reinvent yourself either. I mean, we're seeing people at all different ages doing this. So let's talk about the four steps to, to reinventing yourself and finding a new career. Because this is helpful for a lot of people.
Absolutely. Well, the first is to whatever you decide to do, make sure that it is connected to your passion, something that you love, something that has meaning to you on a deeper level. And the reason for that is if you just go after something that's going to make you money, and let's say that it's a lot of work, and it takes time. It. If you're connected to it on a deeper level, you're more likely to give it the energy and effort it needs to succeed. So, for instance, I worked with, you probably know of Sam, the cooking guy, many years ago, and he was working in the biotech field, and he wasn't happy. So I helped him to get clarity and reinvent his life and make that transition. He went for it, and now he's been a huge success in his career.
Okay. So first and foremost, find out what you're passionate about and kind of gear your thoughts and efforts towards that.
Absolutely. And also the second step is to be decisive. Often we have so many different things we want to do, and I have so many people that come to me for coaching and they say, well, I can't decide, and they're afraid to make the wrong decision. But the truth is you just need to pick a path.
Right. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work.
If it doesn't work, it will at least be moving you forward. You'll have that momentum and it will lead you to something else. The worst thing is to sit there and stay still, stuck, and then have regret that you never gave it a try.
Right. Okay.
And in fact, one of the wealthiest men in the world, Warren Buffett, says that one of the reasons he's so successful is that he's very decisive. He takes decisive action on the spot.
I think that's great. It's hard to be in business with someone or to be around someone that is so kind of waving options all the time, and you just need a decision and then move on.
Right. You know, we get stuck in that analysis. Paralysis, you know, and that doesn't get us anywhere. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just get it done.
Just make a decision. I like that. Okay, so what's the third step?
The third step is to be willing to walk through the fear. And now fear is a human emotion. We all have it. Donald Trump has fear. The difference between somebody that makes millions of dollars with their ideas or really infuses that passion and joy in their life is they take action on their ideas and they're willing to put it out there. I'm not saying it's not going to be scary. It probably will. The scariest part is just the beginning, though. It's just, you know, you just gotta hone your courage for the beginning because it's really the unknown that we're afraid of. And once you take that step, you create a new known.
Yeah, right. You can't be successful unless you take risks. So I think that's a very important point, too. We're almost out of time. But the last step today is you.
Don'T have to do it alone. Work with a mentor, work with a coach. And that's what I do. I hold people by the hand. I give them the direction and get them to reach their goals in such a short amount of time that they would be wandering on their own. Work with someone that has gone the path before you. They have the wisdom through experience so that you don't have to go it alone. That's awesome. And it makes it so much easier.
Okay, so how can people contact you?
