This is a YouTube video titled "ALLISON MASLAN: Why It's Cheaper to Start a Business Than Stay in a Job You Hate" featuring an interview conducted on June 5, 2010. The content includes a conversation between a host (Speaker A) and career coach Allison Maslan, discussing her book "Blast Off" and strategies for transitioning from an unsatisfying job to starting a business. The discussion covers topics such as valuing time spent at a job, the Dream Career Questionnaire, and practical steps for building a new career path while maintaining financial stability.
Of course, most people feel pretty grateful just to have a job these days, even if it's a job they don't necessarily like. But career coach Alison Maslin says if you put a dollar value on the time that you spend on that dissatisfying job, you could launch your own business. Alison has written a new book about this, it's called Blast off and she is joining us in the information center this morning to talk more about that. Thanks for coming by, we appreciate it.
Thanks for having me.
You've actually done the math on how much money people waste at unhappy jobs. Let's start with that, talk more about it.
Well, in a recent study, 87% of people are miss in their job and we work about 75,000 hours from the age 25 to 65. So you figure in a 40 hour work week, just take $10 of those hours and that's about $19,200 a year that you could spend, you know, doing a job you love, really investing that into a new business.
Alright, you've put together in the book A Dream Career Questionnaire to help people get started with this process of perhaps finding their dream job. Give us a few examples.
Well, the biggest hur a lot of people, they want something more but they don't know where to start. And in my book Blastock, I have a process called the Dream Career Questionnaire and it asks questions like what did you love doing as a kid? What are some of your hobbies? You know, where does your passion lie? What books do you like to read? What movies do you like to watch? For instance, I had a woman come to me. She had a job for survival for years. She helped raise her two daughters as a single mom, but she was burnt out. She said, Alison, my spouse spirit is dying. We took her through this process. What came up was she loved fashion, so helped her developed a beautiful online store called heavenspennies.com and now not only is she living her dream, she was able to afford to send her two kids to college.
Now let's clarify, I'm assuming you're not advocating that people just rush out and quit their job and then go find their dream job. This is a process that you have to go through, right?
Absolutely. What I say is let's, you know, don't jump off a bridge. Let's build a bridge to a new path. And so what I help people do in the book is first figure out what they want to do, then create a clear vision and then a step by step plan to break it down, to make it simple. But you can just build something on the side and then as your business starts to make money, take your job to part time if possible. And then once it's doing well and you have enough money to make your expenses, then you can leave your job and go full time for your new business.
And I'm assuming you're following your dream job right now, right?
Well, yes, I've had nine of my own companies, but I have a pretty cool job. I get to help people reach their dreams.
Well, Alison, thanks so much for sharing some of your insight this morning with us. We appreciate it.
All right. Thank you.
And if you'd like to meet Alison in person, she'll be doing a book signing tomorrow, June 5th at the Barnes and Noble and Sheridan boulevard in Westminster, 2 o' clock p.m. you can also learn more about Blast off on our morning show webpage@9news.com.
