Fox Chicago Interviews Allison Maslan on How to Turn Your Passion Into Business

Allison Maslan talks about turning your passion into a business by becoming your own boss and overcoming fears. She shares coaching insights and examples from her book Blast Off to help people create actionable plans for starting a business.
All right, we are talking about jobs and turning job dreams into reality.
Yeah, I mean, it's one of the scariest things if you have a job. One the scariest things, no one can be to lose it. If you're looking for a job, a scary thing is, well, not finding one for a really long time. So. So what some people are doing is they're saying, well, maybe I can't get a job from some, be someone else's employee. Maybe I should be my own boss.
Allison Maslin is here. Her book is called Blast Off. And you actually coach people to turn dreams into reality. I think that's got to be pretty daunting for a lot of people right now to leave a secure job if they have one, to follow their dream.
Well, you know, a lot of people have lost their jobs, and some have gone back and really questioning, is this something that I really love to do? And I think the hardest part for people is to first figure out what is it that I would love to do to get that clarity. And I ask people when I coach them. And in my book, you know, if you could do whatever you wanted to do, you know, what would that be? If time, capability, and money were no object, what would you love to do? And what that does is open your mind to the possibilities. For instance, I had a woman who was in real estate. We know the real estate market has really taken a big hit. She was struggling financially. She loved cooking, so I helped her start an online store called around the World Cooking. And now she's got these gourmet foods that she's selling around the world. She's doing fantastic. Another woman that was a teacher wanted to be her own boss, have her own security, and helped her start a company called Inside Out Organizer. So she's helping people individually, companies get organized.
Okay, so take me to the process. Okay. I'm Corey Chambers. You know, I love my job here at Fox Chicago, but let's just say I didn't. And I said, you know what? Forget it. I'm done. I come to you, and then you ask me, okay, what do you want to do?
What's your passion?
What's your passion?
Right. And I take you through several processes that I also have in the book to get in touch with. Like, what did you love doing as a kid? What were some hobbies?
I have a passion. Let's just say I like to sculpt. I don't like to sculpt, but let's just say I love to sculpt. So what's next for Me. How? How do I take that and turn that into something concrete?
Well, first we have to get you to move past your roadblocks. I'd say one of the most important things, almost more important than the strategy, is your mindset. And so a lot of people get stuck in the fear, and they have negative beliefs, maybe from childhood that, you know, it's not possible. And people get paralyzed with that. So first we have to get you to believe that, yes, I can do this. And one of the things that I do is I help people bust through. I actually take them on the flying trip. Trapeze. That is my passion.
Okay, now, how does that help anyone?
Well, the trapeze is a metaphor for life and business. You have to make the decision to climb the ladder. You got to jump in with both feet. You got to stay focused on your goal, and you absolutely have to go for it. The next thing that I would help you do with your sculpting business is I'd help you create a success plan. You need to get plans.
It's all about plan.
All about a plan. And when you have a plan, when you have a structure more likely to stick with it, you won't procrastinate and quit. So I help you create a big picture vision of your sculpting business, and then we break it down into small steps so it's not overwhelming.
Accomplish the big step.
Exactly.
We don't have time to go through.
What'S in the book, though.
It's called.
It's Allison Maslow.
