Allison Maslan explains why Lego and Harley Davidson lost their way, and argues that companies fail when they chase quick fixes instead of protecting their core vision. Strategic planning beats tactical reactions.
When Lego got away from the bricks, started losing their fan base. When they got back to the bricks, they had their fan base, Harley Davidson. They were so worried about the Japanese motorcycles coming in, they were trying to compete with them instead of being who they were because they got away from their vision and their mission, they started having leadership issues. Things start going wrong, we start to panic and we just get short sighted and we're like, this is a quick fix and this is a quick fix. And they're going after tactics instead of stepping back and having a big picture vision and strategic plan for the company.
