Between Reaction and Response Is One Powerful Pause

Coach Ambereen teaches parents to pause between reaction and response, shifting from defensive behavior to thoughtful communication. Two parents—Barbara, whose 16-year-old son opened up after she learned to listen, and Nick, who discovered his 13-year-old daughter needed to feel heard—found that this pause transformed their relationships.

You've heard wise people say, pause before you speak, act, or react. Why do you think they say that? That's what we're diving into today, the power of the pause and how you can claim it as you make your family development a priority today. Mothers, fathers, moms, dads, Baba, Mama, whatever you call yourself, parenting is the toughest job in the world, and I'm one with you to agree on that front. Most of the time, we are not sure if we're doing it right. Are we messing up? Will we mess them up? Will we be able to salvage this relationship? If any of this resonates, I want you to comment down below the word resonate. Why? Because you will see how many people feel the exact same way as you. One of the biggest fears that research shows parents have is that they are doing things wrong, that they are somehow messing up their kids And in the future, they believe that they'll be lucky if they get to see their kids once a year for Christmas or a birthday. What if I told you that all of that can change? That you don't have to worry about, once my kiddo is 18 and out of the house, I won't have a close relationship with them. I won't know what their stresses are. I won't have a glimpse into their life. I get it. You fear the same things I once used to fear as well. Have no fear because the family-driven coach is near. The power of the pause is how my clients have really begun to parent differently as leaders to be the best for their kiddos. Why? Because your kids are watching and learning everything from you. How to deal with stress, how to act, how to react, how to actually respond to people who are breaking your boundaries, causing you stress, disrespecting you, not really coming and putting forth their end in a relationship. All these things that we're talking about. The only thing between a reaction and a response is the pause in between. Let me say that again. Why? So you can write it down. Share it in the comments as well. That way I know and others know that you're really understanding this concept. Between a reaction and a response, there is pause. Let's take Barbara, a client of mine, for example, who is 41 years old and has a 16-year-old. She felt estranged. She felt distant. She felt like she didn't really know what challenges, thoughts, mindsets the 16-year-old had, all because she had been reacting to him. And as he's going through his own identity shift, he's not looking for a reactive mother. What is he looking for? One who is taking a pause in between Reaction. One who is thinking before speaking, one who is stopping before responding, just the way that the wise told us. So we began to work on this simple formula: pause before you react and learn to respond. Since the last 3 months that she's been working with me, she's seen profound results. In the way that her kiddo now communicates with her. Why? Because she's begun to learn the act of listening. Listening, you see, is what most of our kids are looking for. And a father that I get to work with, the opportunity that I have working with this 45-year-old man, let's call him Nick for today's conversation. Nick also learned that As a man, respect means being heard, understood, supported, and listened to. Yet he wasn't doing the same for his 13-year-old daughter. He felt like he knew better than her, so he just constantly would tell her what to do, how to show up, how to act, and how to react. And so we put the pause in place. Why? Because between a react— between a reaction And in response, there's a pause. So I'd ask Nick things like, well, what do you think she felt? He'd say, I don't know. What do you think she needed from you at that time? He would say, I don't know. Why do you think she was yelling and screaming and throwing an emotional tantrum, in your words? I don't know. Okay. How about you start to pause a little bit before you show up for your daughter? Because as daughters, the way that they seek love, the way that they understand love in their intimate relationships in the future, or even in the now, is by the relationship that they have with their fathers. So you have a remarkable responsibility upon your shoulders on how you're treating these beautiful, young, intelligent, amazing girls. And the same is true for Barbara. Well, because her son wasn't feeling understood, supported, listened to, he would just keep distancing herself— himself from her. And this is the journey that my clients get to take with me, where in just 30 days they start to really change the narrative of their mindset. By 60 days, they learn tools that they're implementing Regularly to make them into habits. And in 90 days, they have learned the art of letting go to heal themselves, to be happier and kinder to not only themselves, but also their families, their children. And they start to have more healthy relationships when it comes to their marriages. Why? Because collectively we're building out this beautiful formula.
