Why You Need to Stop Reaching for Your Phone First

Coach Ambereen Hameed argues that checking your phone first thing in the morning costs you time with family and makes you reactive instead of intentional. She uses a family rule with her kids: "People before things." Starting your day with people instead of screens strengthens your marriage, improves parenting, and builds the legacy that actually matters.

Have you ever found yourself waking up and the first thing that you reach for is your phone? Stay until the end because I really want you to understand what is going on when you pick up that phone first thing in the morning. Hey, if we've never met, my name is Coach Ambereen and it is my intention to make your family development a priority. Why? Because at the end of your life, you will not remember how much you earn, You will not remember the accolades, the status, the cars, the houses. What you'll leave behind is actually relationships, which by all means is the number one predictor of happiness and joy in your life. What I want to dive in today is this great concept That all of us are getting trained and retrained to wake up in the morning and pick up our phones. And the saddest thing is the last thing that we look at is our phone. Now, what's happening over there? When you pick up your phone, you start to tell other people that they're a priority, whether it be scrolling through social media, whether it be responding to messages, or— Working in the early hours to check which emails came through, if you have any items to prepare for in those daily meetings, so on and so forth. When you start your day off like this, what do you do? You literally let the day take a hold of you versus being in charge of your own day. Now, if you are a family person, which is why you are here listening to this, because you know that something is, you know, Kind of lacking, that something is falling behind when you start to, you know, repeat this specific pattern. When you pick up your phone, you don't realize how much time has gone by. Now time has gone by and you find yourself rushing, rushing to catch up to the day, whether it be the kids' breakfast, you know, getting yourself ready for work, or even something as simple. As making sure you arrive to school on time, to work on time. Or have you taken a beat today just to let your spouse know how much you love them, how much they matter to you? Have you found a moment to just hug your kiddo and embrace them, or just look at them that one beat longer so they can feel the love? If any of this resonates with you, where you truly know that there is something that's missing, that the screens are taking over your home, I want you to comment down below and I want you to say the word resonate. By doing this, you teach every single person that you're human just like us, that you face the same challenges that everybody else is facing. As a family member, it is really hard to do all the things Especially when you let the screens control your life first thing in the morning. What starts to happen when you pick up this phone is you almost detach from reality. You put yourself in a place where that is not the priority, that is not going to move the needle, that is not going to bring any more calmness into your day. It's going to be actually the complete opposite. It's going to be this thing where you are going to give your time, your love, your commitment, your dedication to something— that's your phone, that's your device— versus someone. This is a beautiful and simple rule that I came up with with my kiddos very early as they were, and as they were like little, little people. People before things. Now, if this sounds like an idea you want to explore, I want you to just kind of take a moment and ask yourself, what does that mean? What would shift in my life, in my relationships, in my work, in the way I show up in my marriage, the way that I parent my kids? What would change if I really began to practice this simple rule that Ambereen has put for her kids? People before things. Everything would change. And that's what coaching does.
