Your Kids Don’t Want More Stuff—They Want You

Coach Ambereen tells parents their kids don't need bigger houses or more vacations, they need your presence and attention. She shares a story of a divorced mother spiraling into anxiety trying to buy her children's comfort, and an actor reflecting that people remember how they were made to feel, not what they were given.

How often do you find yourself comparing? Let's be honest. Let's take a glance inward and answer this one honestly. I want you to comment it down. I recently met a mother who said, hey Ambereen, after my divorce, I can't afford to live in this place. I keep taking on financial stress because I don't want my kids to feel less than, and this stress is causing causing me anxiety, which then is making me angry, then I'm yelling and screaming, and that's making me feel guilty as a parent. Been there, done that. We're just stretching yourself thin believing in a thinking that you don't want your kids to feel less than. Keep listening until the end because it may not be what you think it is. There's something rooted a lot deeper when we are operating from this mindset. Just like this parent, I too was giving my kiddos beyond capacity. One day I thought, I'm gonna change the way I look at the situation. The great Wayne Dyer reminds us, When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Sadly, we live in a culture of comparison. The more up, down, right, left you're swiping, the more judgmental you're becoming, and you may not be realizing it. I truly believe our kids don't want bigger homes, fancier cars, or more vacations. What they want is your presence. It's a gift. They want your undivided attention. It builds connections. They want playful, fun-loving energy because it creates laughter. As parents leading our homes, we are looking at guilt in the wrong way. First, these high standards are self-imposed. These comparisons are self-inflicted in some capacity. I recently met a great actor, a remarkable businessman, and a brilliant entrepreneur who says while crying, you know, as kids we never realize how much time, effort, energy and investments our parents pour into raising us. My mom gave us what we needed. Comment down below, were you grown up in luxury or did you grow up with necessity? This really gets the ball rolling to figure out what is more important in life right now, to have the luxury and everything, or to have a necessity and great meaningful connections with a strong bond in your homes. He continues talking to say, after my mom passed away, my brothers and I talk about the impact that she left behind. She said, live into your core values and practice them. Be self-reliant. Earn and work hard. Never give up on your goals. Treat people with kindness. Allow people to feel that they matter. These are far beyond the things, and this man has it all. What truly, he says, I would love to have the opportunity to tell my mom just how much I appreciate her for everything that she taught me and for the way that she led her life. Not about the things that she gave. It's when you, me, us compare ourselves to others, we start to accumulate this guilt. Remember, from this lovely story, we recognize People will always remember how you made them feel, not the things that you bought them. So take a little bit of time out of your ordinary day to make it extraordinary by making sure that your kids feel loved, that they feel appreciated, that they feel seen, that they feel like they're an important part of your life. Because this is where that change is actually happening. As we wrap up, let's do a fun activity. Share with us, what is your favorite childhood memory?
