A speaker shares strategies for scaling your business by delegating tasks and building a team. Track your time to find what you can hand off, then hire people to do it so you can focus on what only you can do.
Hey, Planethoners, how's it going out there? Back for day four of the plan a thon. And I am loving planning with you. I've had some late night, I'm having fun, and I am getting my plan together. I haven't posted my goal card yet. I'm still percolating on a couple things. I need to finalize some numbers, actually. I just need to tally up where I am in 2015, because I springboard from one year to the next and build upon the next year. And sometimes I slow it down based on what's happening in life. There is so much to do, as you well know, that one thing that will be really helpful in the year ahead is if you could clone yourself. If you could just straight up clone yourself. And while I don't have a machine that will pop up more of you, there is a way that we can actually get more of you and your message and what you want to do in the world out there in a bigger way, which is why we call it cloning. So actually, right now I am doing a little bit of cloning. As you can see, I've relocated to the office to a different space, and I'm filming from my computer today because right now my photography team has the camera and they're shooting photography shoot right outside the office, actually. So they are shooting. And when my partner and I started the photography business, it was her and I in every single photo shoot. And over time, that was not a sustainable model for growth. And we realized there were some different things that we each individually wanted to do in our lives that we wanted to do so that we felt fulfilled and still engaged in the business and so that we could focus on growing the business. So next year, we'll likely be looking at cloning ourselves a little bit more. But right now we have a team of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 people. So we have cloned ourselves. But if you are not ready to bring on team members yet, I want to back it up and tell you the place to start. Even if you have team members, even if you are hitting a new level in your business, even if you have a day job and a side hustle, still, what we're going to walk through now in this how to clone yourself process will help you. And every time new executives move into a new role, or if you move from a CEO role to a president, even if you're just moving roles in your company or you're adding a new product, or if you're adding a new service offering, this is a great exercise to do as new and fresh things come on your plate, you need to evaluate, okay, if I'm bringing on some new stuff, what are the right things to keep? What's the right mix of things that I need to be doing to have the biggest impact in my business? So now what do you need to do? We're to the action step and the first step that I want you to take is to in your notebook somewhere or in a Google Doc or in a time tracking app, start to document where your time is actually going. So this is your challenge and your exercise. The get an action item for the next week. It is to take look and document where all the time is going. So if you spend 20 minutes in the zone and oh, Lily just got home from school, I'm a little bit out of it. I sometimes make a note of those minute things. Or you might just track when you're moving from activity to activity and observe when you move. Or if you test something like what Courtney mentioned yesterday, the pomodoro technique. I'm going to work for 20 minutes and take a five minute break. Right. So does that infuse your energy so you're not only tracking your time and your activities, but also track and make note of how you feel in that space. How do you feel doing that work? How do you feel coming back to work after a five minute break? Yesterday, I stepped away from the computer at about 6:30. I left the house and went to an appointment and I came back and I'm like, oh my gosh, I feel so much better. I had hours more in me. My energy was jacked way back up and it felt phenomenal. I was totally engaged again in the work I was doing. So I'm going to make a note of that when I'm questioning later, like, oh, should I take a break? Do I need a break? Yes, take the break. Even if it's five minutes. The first challenge before we get to that space of evaluation is start tracking your time. You're likely going to notice some things really early on like, oh, why am I doing this? And make a note, why am I doing this? Oh, I feel great. That felt great. That give me more of that. So if you commit to doing this in the comments, just let us know what strategy or what tool are you going to use to actually track your time for one week? And I'm going to put a note on the calendar. We're going to check back in here in the comments in one week and do a little reflection together to see how it's going see what aha's we had and see where we are. So let us know. Are you going to track it on the app? Are you going to track it in the notes app on your iPhone? Are you going to use a piece of paper? Are you going to pop open a document on your computer or in Google Drive? The first thing is to just let us know what you're going to use to track your time and I'll see you in a week. Bye, guys.
