Do What Scares You

A speaker shares personal stories about overcoming fear through stand-up comedy and recording a country music video. He argues that doing what scares you breaks routine and drives growth.
Growing a business can be a little scary. I mean, what if we fail? What if we completely embarrass ourselves? I mean, can I really do this? No, I can't. No. Yes, I can. As you uplevel and grow in your business, you will face all sorts of new opportunities that will continue to scare the pants off of you. For that reason, I recommend you practice doing things that freak you out. For example, two things that I would really like to do, but they scare the ever loving daylights out of me are to record a country music video and to do stand up comedy. Can I sing? I'll let you be the judge. Don't stop believing hold on to that feeling by the rain. Am I funny? I want so badly to be funny. A few years back, I set a five year timeline to make these two things happen. I am still working on the country music video recording, but I've made some steps toward the standup bit. I recently attended a stand up comedy workshop with my girl Joanna. She knew I was looking to get my funny practice on and she came across this workshop in D.C. that was just a couple of hours long and it was with the fabulous Sara Amar. Shelley. She's been on Last Comic Standing, y'. All, I'm learning from a pro. It was a fabulous two hour workshop. Well, instead of me telling you about it, why don't I just share a couple of lines with you? So as many of you know, I work from home. And when I first started working from home, I thought it was going to be the life. I'd wake up, make myself a green juice, power through some work, and I'd be on the back deck drinking a margarita by 3pm before the kids got home. And people often ask, do I feel guilty working from home with the kids there? Do I feel guilty? Are you kidding me? Do I feel guilty? No. My husband and I, we fight over who gets to go to work first. Uh oh, my turn to go to work first today. Ah, ah, ah. You went to work first yesterday. My turn. All right, all right, all right. That's all of my stand up for now. The people in the live room laugh. Feel free to if you laugh too. If not, no need to say anything. Guess what time it is. Now it's your turn. How can you practice for the scary moments? By doing the things that scare you now but have very little risk. Not only will breaking from your routine prep you for growth in your business, but it will increase the happy in your life. Don't get me wrong, I love routine and structure and a rinse and repeat model brings efficiency, but it can also wear on you and lead us to massive, massive boredom, lack of creativity, and lack of innovation. Boredom is the scream of unused potential. So hop off the hamster wheel and tell us in the comments, what scary, unexpected thing are you going to make happen next? That's all for now. Thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to like and subscribe. And if you're watching on YouTube, don't forget to head on over to niceops.com to hop on the nice list. I'll see you in the next video.
