Keep On Driving

A photographer shares how to stay focused on what matters. Build a focus list, align your daily work with your actual goals, and ignore the distractions that pull you off course.
All right, all right. Our plans are starting to come together. We're starting to make some action and we're getting to the heart of it now. You know, as we step into the year ahead. As you walk away from this plan a thon you are immediately going to see some shiny objects that are going to start to draw you in and lure you in and they're going to be oh so sexy because there is a lot of good stuff out there that you could spend your time and energy on. But if you want to reach your goals next year, we have got to keep the focus on that goal card, we have got to keep the focus on the thing you identified in your freedom map, and we have got to keep our focus on the hundred dollar bills. So we're going to be proactive and we're going to create a plan for keeping the focus. Now, when I first started my photography business, we had a goal card. And my first year that goal was to just relearn the camera. The last time I picked up a camera, it was manual and I stepped away from photography for a long time. So I had to completely relearn the digital landscape. I had to learn Photoshop, I had to learn how to use all these buttons and all of the things that were on this new digital camera. So I had to focus my efforts on learning. Then in 2009, my sole goal was to make some money, just any money at all. That was my financial and monetary goal. I didn't know if it was going to be 500, I didn't know if it was going to be 5,000. I just knew I needed to make any money at all. So you can start to see what the activities that you might do are if you need to relearn a camera. I was taking Photoshop lessons. I was spending my time learning. I started taking a picture a day just to practice using my camera so I can make quick adjustments and I knew what the heck I was doing. Again in 2009 when my focus shifted and my goal was to make any money at all, I had to start focusing on marketing. Because otherwise how was anyone going to know that I had these services available and my activities and my efforts and my education aligned with those goals. So is there something you need to learn? Is there an action step you need to take, such as marketing, telling people that you are taking pictures, as it was the case in my instance, just posting those pictures on my Facebook wall to start to have conversations and spark interest in what I was doing. I want you to take some time now to identify what, what are those things that I need to focus on? Even if it's at the big bucket level, such as marketing. Because there are any number of things you can do when it comes to marketing and we're going to talk about those all week long. But for now, just identify. Is it marketing? Is it education? Do I need to get a mentor? Do I need to have a community of people around me who think like I think or like I want to be thinking? If you're getting ready to make some changes to in your business and in your lifestyle. So once you have that focus list, you are going to be able to leverage the power of something we call keep on driving. So you've got a focus list and you know what needs to get your attention in the year and years ahead to help your business grow. Because you've aligned those things with your goals, with your vision, and with your freedom map. Now, everything else that comes up, you're just gonna keep on driving. Oh, that shiny new course that I think I need to take, not on my focus list. Keep on driving. Oh, but maybe I should be working with that person over there. Keep on driving. Now, of course there are gonna be times when you want to yield and re evaluate because you learn something new as you're implementing that marketing plan. You identify a gap of knowledge that you have or a gap of knowledge maybe you don't want to learn, maybe you just want to hire that out. But you're going to build the focus list so we at least have a place to start and a place to evaluate from. So I'm going to post my focus list in the comments below and I can't wait to see yours too. I'll see you there.
