One Way to Increase Your Referrals Faster

A business advisor explains why narrowing your focus to one core service gets you more referrals. People refer what they understand. When you try to do everything, nobody knows what to send your way.
So what do you do? Oh well, I run my own consulting business and I also run my own photography business with my partner Joanna. She's just fabulous. Oh, I'm also starting up an online education business with my partners six hours later. And I also love working with people on their money. I even take on part time bookkeeping. Oh my goodness. Speaking of. Hey everyone blown that. You don't have a clue what they really do. Take my made up friend Sally for example. She is a web designer who can do your bookkeeping and take care of all of your personal errands too. Whoa. She can do all of that? Yeah, there's no doubt Sally can do all of those things. Remember though, just because you can do it all doesn't mean you should. In fact, offering to do it all can actually hurt the your growing business or career. Fun Fact About Me I can take some seriously awesome notes. I have a system for it. And when you read my notes, you will be crystal clear on what went down at that meeting. But some of the best career advice I ever got was to stop looking like you're taking notes in meetings if you want to move to the next role. Truth is, at the time I wanted promotions and raises. There was no way I was going to get them if the leadership in the room viewed me and my role as chief note taker. Did I still take notes? You betcha. But I was a bit more discreet about it. Now, what does my note taking lesson have to do with your growing business? How does this relate to you and my girl Sally? Listen, people need clarity on how you can help them and it's your job to make sure they have clarity on exactly how you and your business can help them. This is especially important early on in your business when you're taking on new projects or when you're trying to start up a new service line. And it's critically important in our marketing efforts too. When just starting out or trying to build traction in our business, referrals are going to be a major source of traffic. But if you do a bazillion different things like Sally and nobody knows what your focus is, then they don't know what to refer people to you for. Or if you do the thing you don't want to become known for so well, and you hang your hat on that, like my note taking, you could get known really well for the exact thing you don't want to spend the rest of your life doing. So how can you build fast traction in your business? Have just one thing to hang your hat on that thing people know you for. Alright, let's play a game. I'm gonna say a word and you tell me who comes to mind when I say makeup artist? Who comes to mind for you when I say photographer? Who comes to mind when I say web designer? Who comes to mind for you in my case? When I started working with businesses, I went all in on a concept called how to clone yourself. Starting with this one thing gave me one thing to focus. Sales, marketing and my consulting around. Starting with one thing gave other people something to say. Oh, Amber does that. They said this especially when other people who needed a clone brought that up. So cloning and Amber ended up going together like peanut butter and jelly. The point is, we need to be so clear in what you do that when we hear your ideal client screaming for your health, you pop straight into our mind and we send them your way. We need to know when we hear someone that needs that specific thing. We refer them to you. We don't want to think of 10 things. When we think of your name, we need that one thing to refer you for. So what's your thing? What do we refer people to you for? Alright everyone, I can't wait to see your area focus in the comments. And in the meantime.
