Short excerpt from a YouTube interview titled "Why Smart Founders Ask for Help" (Oct 10, 2025). In this Q&A the speaker advises founders planning to sell: (1) consult founders who have sold before to review documents and explain mechanics (escrow, APA, closing), and (2) prioritize speed—decide quickly among offers and keep the timeline from buyer decision to closing short.
If you were talking to another founder that was looking to sell their startup, what a couple pieces of advice you think you'd give?
I would say one thing would be to talk to founders who have sold before. That helped us a lot because we wanted to see how escrow would work, how the APA agreements work, how closing and how these basic steps work. Like being in the excitement of acquisition, we tend to lose scope of these small, small things, which could matter a lot in the long run, and have them look over the basic documents. And the other thing is, time is key in this process. If you have different offers, different buyers, you would want to decide with one as soon as you can and move forward with it. Decisions can change. Everything can happen. So keep that timeline as short from the buyer decides to buy and closing. That's what I would say.
