know is a busy day. I'll be asking you a few questions, and then we will be opening up the floor to journalists. I would like to start with Vishy. The Olympiad is quite unlike almost any other event in chess. You have the world's strongest players competing alongside teams where countries are still developing, all under one roof. What do you think makes the Chess Olympiad so special, both for the players and for the wider chess world?

Hello. At the start, I would just like to announce a bit of sad news that today we lost Mr. Georgios Makropoulos. I first heard when I was very, very young. I saw that he had played in the Chess Olympiad and he was— he worked all his life For chess, surrounded by chess, and want to express my sincere condolences to his family, the Greek chess fraternity, and all of us. That said, I would say that the Olympiad, especially recently and this year as well, is a record-breaking tournament, a record number of teams participating, simply the largest event that chess organizes, one of its premier events, a very prestigious title, the strongest country in the world. And it's also a place where chess players of all levels, countries of all levels compete in the same tournament, thereby combining elements of a festival, of a celebration of chess, and that's what makes every Olympiad very special. We hope that this Olympiad too will reach those very high standards. lofty standards and will succeed in them. I would like to acknowledge that there are certain problems that have cropped up. We know that with the accommodation for participants, for accreditations, some teams are having trouble. Thank you, Bashir. Alisher, Uzbekistan has become one of the most exciting countries. Especially in recent years with your results. What does hosting this event here mean for Uzbekistan?

I think, um, salaam alaikum everyone, welcome to Samarkand. In the first place, I think it's, um, as just, uh, His Excellency Interim President Vishy Anand was Just mentioned, one of the largest chess events in the world, and this is naturally a spotlight for the whole Uzbek chess history and for the world. And now we are welcoming a record number of chess players and major channels and, you know, Different, say, countatives, ambassadors, captains from all over the world are coming to Uzbekistan to witness this remarkable Chess Olympiad 2026. And Uzbekistan has prepared a great number of, I would say, programs for the whole event because It's simply one of the, I think, largest but at the same time most responsible and hardest events at Olympia because we are hosting at the same time 3 major events. One is FIDE Chess for People with Disabilities, and there are 35 countries, 41 teams competing right next to the hall in Minion Hotel. So this is also a very new experience for Uzbekistan to host para chess with the open section and the women's section as well. So the second thing we're hosting is definitely Congress. It's a very important, I think, period for FIDE because candidates who are now rooting for presidency in FIDE is happening in Uzbekistan. So we're preparing for it as well. It's a very responsible event as well. And the third, but the most important one, is the Olympiad itself. We have been preparing for it for almost 4 years, and huge number of infrastructure we have built over this period for the Chess Olympiad. As you can witness, there are 3 main expos. One is the one we are here. Second one is where the matches will take place, and the third one is game zone for the chess players as well. So Uzbekistan has seriously prepared for the end. I am sure, as Vishwanathan Anand has just mentioned, that there are some key moments that we need to strengthen, to put everything in its place with accommodation, with all the other details, and I am sure with the experienced FIDE team, Uzbek local team will resolve this. And definitely we are getting ready for the opening ceremony later at 7 PM by Tashkent time. So this is a huge and major event for Uzbek, for the country, for Uzbekistan.

4 years is quite a long time for these preparations, which is obviously showing why. What has been the most challenging part of organizing? an event of this magnitude?

I think the most challenging part is always something new that you haven't experienced yet. One of the most, I think, critical experiences that we're gaining is communication with all the teams because this, you know, huge number of teams are coming to Samarkand from Tashkent, Some of them are coming to Samarkand and expecting them all and, you know, at the same time serving quality for all FIDE members of these countries is a very responsible job. And I'm sure there are always things to learn. That's why for us it's very important now to educate and to make sure that the Olympiad gets started successfully. So I think this is the most important part.

Thank you, Begim. Two years ago, you took home a medal with Team USA. Now you're back playing for Uzbekistan again on home soil. Tell me a bit about this change of decision. What brought you back?

Assalamualaikum, Ramakya. Hello, everyone. Well, first of all, I'm really glad to be here and happy to be back to Uzbekistan. I got invited back by the Federation and government, and I was really pleased by that invitation. And first, first time they invited me, I was happy, and then I was like, why not? I love my country. I left it for some personal reasons, and I'm happy to be back. And compete for my Uzbek team and girls are amazing. So I'm happy to be here.

And your sister is also your team captain, if I'm not mistaken. That's an extra special way of coming back. Tell me how you feel about that.

Yes. Well, it's, it's going to be really unusual because my sister used to be the number 1 women's player in Uzbekistan and she was the lead. So it's fun to see her as a captain. I'm excited for her and I really believe that she's going to do a great job and it's going to be a little bit of different dynamic, but it's gonna work out really cool, I guess.

Thank you. Noribek, how different does this Olympiad feel for you compared with previous editions, knowing that you're playing here in Uzbekistan with so much home support for your team?

Hello everyone. First of all, it's a great honor for, for our players, for our team to represent, you know, Our country in Pyat. It's a huge event for our country, for our nation. Obviously, this you know Samarkand hosted several big tournaments and has an experience. We hosted a FIDE World Rapid and Blitz in 2023, and also last year there was a Grand Swiss. And I heard a lot of good feedbacks from our colleagues about organization, about the conditions. So I think most of the players is familiar with the place and knows the environment. In general, yeah, if I compare this Olympiad with 2024 and Chennai, I think objectively speaking, our team has improved a lot in this period. Today we have 2 top 10 players, and also our board 3 is almost 27 100 players. And I think we came to this Olympiad in a very good form. And yeah, you know, it's a very proud moment for our team to finally, to know, defense, to defend our title from 2022 and, you know, hopefully to bring back the trophy again to Uzbekistan. And yeah, I would like to Welcome all the guests. First of all, you know, to I wish them to have an enjoyable stay here, and I believe that this Olympiad, you know, will bring more people, not only country, also from other other countries. You know, it will bring more popularity, and you know, that's ultimately that's you know goal. You know, when we when we speak about chess, you know, we we don't only speak about only Uzbek or Other you know Central Asian countries. It's you know bringing more people from other countries as well, and you know showing that you know Uzbekistan is you know showing itself as a global power. And I think by now we can say that in a at least in a chess chess Uzbekistan has established itself among the very very top countries. And yeah, I think our results speaks for itself and. I hope that this Olympiad will be no exception.

And playing here on home soil naturally brings more expectation and attention. Does this cause some sort of nervousness for you, or does it motivate the team even more?

Well, I think there will be obviously pressure, like, you know, huge amount of people, the crowd, our nation will cheer for us and will root, and You know, we, we, we got, you know, our government is, you know, investing and, you know, they're taking care of the other stuff. So if we, if we show our best game, like the best qualities, I think we'll have good chances. But it's, you know, all comes down to whether if we can manage this pressure, and also the— it depends on the forms of the players. And I think if we start smoothly, like if we get rid of this early pressure, I think then our chances will increase dramatically, and I think we'll have great chances.

So the hall was, of course, in advance planned with FIDE team, and we have prepared the design together with FIDE team as well. So the local young, you know, designers who designed it, they paid also us very detailed attention to the national ornaments and national style of chess attraction. And at the same time, I believe, when it's obviously for a country where chess is very popular, you would expect a great number of people to visit, so we wanted the Expo Center to become also an interesting spot for many visitors who would like to come. Like, we're hosting at the same time a Para Chess Olympiad and Chess Olympiad and Congress. The first thing is, like, we're bringing together the whole world, and I think this is where your responsibility becomes the major, like, commitment you should you should show. What are certain things outside of the results that you remember that was important to you, that you enjoyed from previous Olympiads? Begüm?

Honestly, during the Olympiad, it's always about the team and the people, not the place. But for me, Uzbekistan and Samarkand is special. Obviously, I'm going to remember this a lot more than the other ones. But definitely the venue and the conditions always like important for the team and the player. And in the past, all of the Olympiads were organized amazingly as this one too. So it's great joy to play the Olympiad. I'm always excited to compete at the FIDE Olympiad. So it's, it's just the atmosphere here and how all the players are just gathered in one place and competing and at the same time having a lot of fun.

Nordebek?

Um, yeah, I've played in 3 different Olympiads. First one in 2018 in Batumi, and in 2022 in Chennai, and 2024 in Budapest. I would say, I think it's incredibly important, the conditions for the players, because When you have good conditions and you have a good accommodation, the food, the hotel, this directly impacts your confidence, your mood, your results. So I think we were very lucky in Chennai in 2022 because our hotels, accommodation was amazing. We had access to the beach and we had an amazing time. So I think ultimately that also was a part of our success. And in Budapest, I would say, you know, organization-wise, I think there were some challenges, and I think it was a very, you know, typical European style of organization where, you know, the priority was given to host the Olympiad as, you know, as a regular event. But in our country, I think it's quite different. The attention, the, you know, the people, I think our people loves chess and, you know, our, our nation, you know, they all cheer for, for our players and for our teams. So I think the, the, you know, attention-wise, I think the, this Olympiad is incomparable with, with others because here, you know, people really watch, watch chess and, you know, they really love players. And I think, I'm sure you will have a— you will witness a lot of chess fans during this Olympiad. And also, I've seen the same, you know, passion for chess only in India and in our country. So I think this, you know, this is not coincidence that these 2 major countries are hosting the most important events in recent years. So I think this can be explanations. And also for the coming years, I think, yeah, this— I think we'll have a great, great, great competition with India. And eventually, I mean, this, you know, positive impact for chess as it will bring more people, more, more more fans to watch. I think for me personally, this Olympiad is the most important event for this year. You know, I've said it all in many different occasions. So I think I'm expecting, you know, very, very different atmosphere and very different event, and I hope that everybody will enjoy and yeah, we'll have a very Memorable memories. Thank you.

One of the things I can say is that. 10-year-olds now are, in many cases, much stronger than 10-year-olds from long back. So I'm not even sure what mistakes I should tell them to avoid. The basic point I'm making is that chess development is, if anything, speeding up. And most of the mistakes that I can relate to, which I have made myself and they make, tend to be of the emotional category, how they react to results, how they react to situations, rather than technical at the chessboard.
