As a former player who has sat in Olympiad halls, I now I know how both energizing and demanding this event can be. If you are among the favorites. You arrive with weight on your shoulders to win and deliver. If you are ranked as an outsider, you arrive to prove a point. But in both cases, you come as a representative of your own country and culture, wanting to give your best and to show the best that you have.

For the first time, the FIDE Chess Olympiad for people with disabilities is taking place alongside the main Olympiad. I'm happy to say that we have been very fortunate to have the government of Uzbekistan and personally the President of Uzbekistan, Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, the Chairman of the Uzbekistan Chess Federation, Mr. Abdullah Ariyipov, And the Hokimiyat of Samarkand as our trusted partners. There are very few places in the world where chess has such level of state support and public recognition as Uzbekistan.
