The Age of AI: Preparing for Jobs That Dont Exist Yet (Talk Highlights) | Aswin Sarang

In this interactive talk, Aswin Sarang addresses a student audience about how to navigate a future shaped by artificial intelligence where many jobs will be unrecognizable today. He argues that the only reliable preparation is to become a multifaceted, dynamic individual who constantly up‑skills and stays open to learning. Sarang stresses the practical use of AI tools such as ChatGPT, urging students to adopt them rather than ignore them, and frames ethical use as a personal responsibility. He repeatedly challenges the audience to question authority, verify facts, and conduct their own research, illustrating this with a simple exercise about the world’s most profitable company. The talk moves into concrete career guidance: leveraging emerging digital opportunities (NFTs, creative technologist roles, self‑publishing), building strength (resilience, curiosity) over mere skill, and aligning work with personal happiness to avoid stress‑related health issues. He also highlights the importance of choosing mentors wisely, maintaining social responsibility, and giving back through teaching. Throughout, Sarang mixes anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and a conversational tone to motivate the audience to take ownership of their future in an AI‑driven world.

What do you think about the title, The Age of AI: Preparing for Jobs That Don't Exist? How do you prepare for something that doesn't exist? Is it possible? Do you think that it's possible to prepare? Because you can't actually prepare for something that's ahead. What you need to have, you have to remain as a multifaceted individual who's very dynamic and very open. That means as the age changes, you should be very open to learning new things. And if you look at the last, you know, 10 to 20 years since you guys have gone through, or your forefathers have gone through different types of industry revolution, right? So every time there's there's a revolution that happens, there is actually different kind of jobs are being lost, but new kinds of jobs are being created, right? So the difference is the new job that is created is upskilling jobs, right? So when you say upskilling, it's like you're moving from an unskilled laborer to a skilled laborer. That means it is required for you to learn new things. How many of you are using ChatGPT here on a daily basis? Nobody else? Come on guys, be honest. Not on a daily basis. Not on a daily basis, but okay, be honest. How many of you are using it to write your assignments? Okay, all right, I'm gonna take that as a yes from the entire class. All right, see, what you guys need to understand is, see, there are some ethical practices that universities and work that puts in place, but Your ability as an individual is to be— it's based purely based on your ability to look at opportunities and use opportunities in your favor. You get what I'm saying? That really shows your adaptability. So if ChatGPT, a technology like ChatGPT, exists and if you're not using it, it clearly means you're not up for the task. Aren't you all plagiarizing in some shape or form? Your teachers, professors, people with PhDs. Right? We're always taking knowledge that is already out there, we're trying to understand, we're creating our own perspective, and we're putting it out there. Am I correct? Right? There is no such thing as new information. New information comes from innovation. Until or unless you're innovating, you're not innovating, you're not having any new information. But we all claim this plagiarizing in some shape or form, right? So the fact is, how do we Understand our limits, but at the same time, mindset will remain outside the box. But just to fulfill your task, you will think or act in such a way that it gets completed. Does it make sense? You don't have to agree with everything the university says or a job says, but if it gets the job done, get it done. Keep an open mind. Right now, all of you sitting here might have multiple interests. Right? You might be studying 3Ts that you might not even be interested in. Maybe your parents told you to take it, or you have other reasons for it. You might not— there's no guarantee that you graduate, you find a job that you like, which you think that you like today, you get into the job and you start working, there is no guarantee that after 1 or 2 years you will still like it. You know why? Because on a biological perspective, Human beings are designed in such a way that you're supposed to look for new ideologies, new ideas, new information. So do not base your career based on an industry or an individual or an ideology. Turn yourself into an individual that is multifaceted and dynamic. 100 years ago, if like a hologram that you see in Jai Tex or any exhibition Right? It looks cool, but imagine 100 years ago, you're gonna time travel and quickly introduce that technology. How will people see it? Will they get scared?
Yes.
Right? Why is that? Fear of the unknown. Fear of unknown. That's human nature. We all have it. Because we don't know what's outside. We listen to our guides, we listen to our mentors, we listen to what they say. We took advices. Most of the people who give us advices hasn't even been there and done that. But do we question? Simple question: how many of you question my credibility to be here? Everyone is taking 30 minutes of your time. How old are you?
19.
19 is an age where all of your hormones, your energy, and the entire body is like, you know, in its excited state. You can use that anything. You can build structures, you can write amazing books, you can create amazing ideas. So much you can do. But he chose to spend that the night at the age of 19. He chose to spend to come here. Listen to me. Do you know anything about me? Are you sure? Do you think that's the right choice in life?
He's right.
You only get to know as you go. So there's two aspects of it, right? Somebody, an opportunity presents itself in front of you. You have the option to choose to explore it or not. Your HR or your teacher told you there is a talk happening. It might be of benefit to you, so it's nice to show up and just to hear. Or somebody forced you to come here and you showed up, right? In either cases, it's fine because you all are at the age where, you know, you enjoy life, you have your own priorities. But the fact of the matter is you have to question everything. You have to question me, you have to question the things that I say. You always have to question credibility. But if you're not, that means you're not curious enough. You're willing to waste the 30 minutes of your time at the age where you're super young, you can do amazing stuff. You just just come here and listen to me. Is that fair on you guys? It's not because you guys are the future generation. You have to clear the mistakes that we made. Apart from the fact that you have to build your own life and build amazing things, you also have to clear up the past mistakes that we made. You can think about the responsibility that you have on your shoulders, right? See, I would say there's 3 kinds of people in the world. People who think— who create the problems, people who solve them, then there are people who think there is problem but it's none of my problem. There is a fourth category. World is perfect. There is no problem. Okay, so which is the world's most profitable company in the world? We have Google and Apple. Any other? Any other? Microsoft. Okay. Amazon.
Tesla.
Why nobody is looking it up online? You guys have mobile phones, you can look it up online and check if the information that you know is correct or not. World's most profitable company. A company's profitability equal to its success. If it's not making money, it's not the world's best company. It's not the company that none of you thought.
Yeah.
Okay. How many of you? How many of you all are here? You want to build a career, but you don't know what's the best company in the world. Simple information. You see, you see the problem, right? Nobody thought about looking that up. You all want to be successful, right? Everyone wants to be successful, right? If you want to be the best, you have to work with the best. Simple logic, agree or not, right? But nobody bothered looking up online. It's just out there. So what does that say? से बारी माइंडसेट। ये जैसे फोकस ऑन रॉंग थिंग्स, करेक्ट? I'm able to open you up. I'm able to make you guys think for yourself. You guys starting to think? Right? So that means this is a base that you want to build career but you don't know which is the world's most profitable and biggest company in the world. Samir Aramco funds many other companies. The many of the companies that you said is owned by Saudi Arabia. That's the capital they invest. You understand? So that means you guys all walked into this room, right, with certain mindsets, certain plans and everything. Erase all of it. Restart, replan the whole thing. Start from ground up. Throw everything out of the window. Because if you don't have that piece of information, because you, you need to understand that you have a plan and You want to build a career. It's always based on something, right? Either because you want to have fame, or you want to make money, or you want to lead a fulfilling life, or you're just curious, right? You just learn a particular skill set to build something that comes in the category of curiosity and innovation. You guys agree to everything that I said so far? Any disagreements? Sure, go.
You said Finally, I have a question. You said Tom is famous company. This is as of today. You are going to tell us about the future, like 10 years, 20 years from now. How can you give a direct date on this information? We never know if this company is still going to be famous in the next 10 years.
Very good question. But were you questioning that before? Were you questioning that before, before I gave you that piece of information? That's the whole point. You question me now.
Because I still want to advise.
Okay, see, that's the whole thing. Don't believe me, don't believe the word I said. Do your own research, right? And she did the research. She got a piece of information to try to correlate that with me and look it around and ask me about it, right? So I could be wrong as well. Anybody could be wrong. You have to always have to do your own research. Somebody says something, say Security is good. Okay, all right, let me try that. Might not work for you, but you guys need to understand your brain has the ability to create new neural pathways to learn anything that you want. You might not have the required skill set or understanding, but as long as you have an interest in a particular subject, you can actually, actually jump in and go ahead and learn it. As long as you have the passion, right, and the drive, you wouldn't find any roadblocks that come your way as a problem. You'll get through it. To actually build a career, there might be certain subjects that you don't like, but you'll end up learning it because you want to get to the top, right? At the end of the day, whichever career that you choose, you have to be happy. Check if it makes you happy, which means every day you have to work at it, right? If you're not happy about it, like, you'll complain. You'll complain to your friends, you complain to your family. Most importantly, you wouldn't love yourself. That's not the right way to improve. Because if you choose a career out of stress or somebody, you know, forced you to do it, what will happen is naturally, if you're doing something that you don't love, you build anxiety, you build stress. That creates different kind of diseases. As an individual, you'll grow older much faster. And if you're an individual with stress and anxiety, what happens to the people around you?
They suffer.
You're going to put that on us and they wouldn't like it. It would be difficult for you to build a family. You might want to— you are as individual, you want to build a family in the future, you want to have husband, you want to have a wife, you want to have children. It wouldn't be fair to them. So when you choose your career, when you choose a choice in life, everything matters, right? If you choose a mentor, look at his life. If you choose to follow him, if you choose to take advices from him, look at Look at his life, see how his career is. Where did he start? How is it going? How is he an individual as a human being? Is he a good family man? Is he a good husband? Is he a good father? All those things matter. So choose your mentors and your leaders wisely. Do not look at one aspect, because if you choose them, that's what you're going to use as information to build yourself. Agreed? Focus on your career. It matters a lot. All right, what you need to do as career planners is to become good individuals with kindness and compassion, because not many people have that. That's a nice skill set to have. You need to have your own signature and logo. You have to build yourself up. Let the job come find you and learn everything that is there to learn. Don't base on certain things because the world changes. Clearly technology is at the core because we're moving towards a world where regardless of whichever, you know, career that you choose, technology is involved in some shape or form. Like we were talking about, you know, lunch, where the Mona Lisa painting is basically a static image. Obviously it has its value, right? Obviously it's considered as one of the greatest paintings, but the kind of art that we have has changed. It has become digital art. We have NFTs now. How many of you own NFTs? Just out of curiosity, I'm asking. Do we know what NFT is? Huh?
Do we know what NFT is?
I'm asking, how many of you own NFT art? It doesn't matter, I'm just asking out of curiosity. The fact of the matter is, let's just say if you're an artist, right? You might— let's just say your parents pushed you to pursue the career of engineering and you're sitting in the class and like, okay, I don't love this, I don't want to do this, I'm an artist. But no, be opportunistic. Use what you already know to build the life that you want. Build digital power. The kind of jobs that we have now never existed in the past, right? If you're into technology, there's a new job called creative technologist. Basically, you use your engineering knowledge and technology to build creative systems. That might excite you. How many of you have been to You can self-publish. You don't need nothing because all the resources are out there and it's free. 90% of them are actually free. So if you're not using those resources to build yourself, let me tell you, you fail yourself. You don't want to do that to yourself because every single one of you in this class actually deserves an amazing life and a happy one. Every one of you deserves to have success. So don't think for a second that you can settle for less. Explore. If you have, let's just say you have, you made a list of 5 companies that you want to work for, who work in the same industry. One company is number 1, second company is number 2, second company is number 3, right? You'll think that, okay, applying job in the first company is, you know, highly likely I would get a job. You would settle for less and okay. 3 seems okay. Don't bullet yourself. Give yourself time. Build yourself up. Work for the number one company because you deserve it. You know why? See, where does your confidence come from? You look at your marks. Okay, I'm not so great in math. So professor goes like, you're not fit to be an engineer. You believe it. The biggest thing that you could do is to believe it. Don't want to do that. What do you do? You question that. Why is he saying that? Why is he— he doesn't know me. He's assessing me based on that. So what do you do? Get curious. Check if he's right. You understand? He said you're not good to do that. So check if he's right. How do you check if he's right? By actually exploring it. Right? Right. Because there is no other way. How would you know if he's right? You have to explore it. And in the process, you'll end up becoming successful and end up proving him wrong, right? That could happen. That's a greater possibility than you being in the wrong. Makes sense? See, I took a flight to come here. I was in India. I just went to spend some time with family to celebrate I spent, say, 8K to show up here. Okay, I took a business class flight because it's an old life, old style, just to give you this, guys, you guys this information, right? I'll still make more money. That's okay. The fact of the matter is, me being here, it has to be useful for you guys, right? I showed up, right? I had no idea You don't see a presentation here, right? I didn't spend any time building a presentation, right? But I showed up. My 8K that I spend on business class is useful only if you walk away from information that I said and question it. Makes sense, right? Your life has to be based on that. Explore everything. Opportunities coming your way, sure. You might not have all the things in your favor. For sure. How would you show up? You would show up only if your case— how else you gonna show up, right? How many of you spiritually— how many of you pray or believe in God? Okay. People who are spiritual tend to be a lot more hopeful because a lot of different scriptures explains that and think about a higher power. They always go through, so naturally they have that ability. Those who don't tend to learn the ways of science. Still works. Science is spirituality, right? You'll eventually get there because the more you study, you understand nothing can exist as it is. There has to be something. So a small— like I said, a small piece of crystal that you put from the ground is making the whole thing possible. All the digital devices that we have is powered by that. So you are saying that the It makes the whole radio transmission possible, right? If Tesla didn't invent AC current— and I say invent, it wasn't an invention, more of a discovery— and he didn't decide to not patent it and give it out, none of these systems would be functioning today. If he decided to patent it and if he decided to make a profit out of it, all the open source technology that we have today, we wouldn't have even 3 phones. You wouldn't have your laptops. So remember, you as human beings have a social responsibility. Always give back. It's important because the knowledge that you have today is not yours. You took it for free. Even if your parents paid for it, nothing is free. You have to pay it forward. Teach. The best way to learn is to teach. Don't take anything for granted. Okay, so basically I didn't teach anything new today. I just reminded you of what you already know, right?
You know, I should— like, what kept you going until you found an interest in this?
I'm still not interested in it. That's the truth. Yes. Every day it felt like quitting. Yes. Every day it felt like not waking up. Every day it felt like, why am I even doing this? Is it going to get me anywhere? Is it going to make me secure? Is it going to make me, you know, how do I say, many things. You can attach many things to it, but fact of the matter is I'm not going to sugarcoat nothing for you guys. The path ahead is not easy. The people who become entrepreneurs are the ones who's not willing to, you know, what do you say, clear roadblocks. It's about getting up every single time, who's willing to fail and not ashamed of failing. You have You have to fail hard, faster, repetitively. Being an entrepreneur every day is crazy. It's mad. Every day you're taking a risk. You have no clue what's next. You invest a certain amount of money or you go for a project, there's no clue. Things could blow up right in front of you and you won't be able to do nothing about it.
Just—
that's a fact.
Yes.
So what do you have to build? Strength, not skill. You understand? Skill you will learn because any industry you go, naturally you will spend time there to learn. Skill is something that comes to you based on repetitiveness, based on experience. The more time you spend, skill you get. But strength is something that you yourself have to build. Yes, you have some genetic advantage. Let's say all of us forefathers have certain skill set, it pass on to the next 7 generations. Basic cell biology and DNA biology. Care of. You will have a genetic advantage, but at the end of the day, your forefathers also learned. They put in the effort at some point, so which you can take advantage of. But at the end of the day, you still have to put in effort. Any other questions? Does that answer you? Does that satisfy you, right? Does that answer every other follow-up question that you had?
Yeah, is that, you know, because often People sort of say that when they find their passion, it's like you know dream map and everything just becomes so easy out there.
Oh, they're lying to you. Yes, I used to think I used to think that as well for quite some time. But later I realized there were days that I wasn't passionate about. There were certain tasks that accounting as a businessman, I still have to look at the numbers. I hate looking at the numbers. It's kind of constant from a place of insecurity. Think about how much money am I making? Is this money enough for the next month, right? It's boring and it's not a right— it's not very pleasant, but I still have to do it, right? Because that is linked to the rest of the aspect. Makes sense? So have that mindset. So it's not a problem. You won't look at it as a problem. If you look at it as a problem, then it's hard. You don't want to do it. So that answers every other follow-up question that could possibly emerge, right?
Yeah.
Okay, perfect. Any other questions? All right then.
All right, I guess we don't have any questions.
Cool, I'm just gonna quickly wind up. It was nice meeting you guys. Okay, all of you go on and achieve great things, and God bless you all. All right, happy to be here. Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
