The most famous prison in the country is about to get a major makeover. Construction firm Tutor Perini has been awarded a nearly $50 million contract to renovate the main prison at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco to address deterioration from extreme weather, water, and remediate hazardous materials and reinforce the building for earthquake safety. Between 1.4 to 1.7 million people traffic the site on average every year over the past decade, so it's definitely important to ensure the building is safe for staff and tourists. Tutor Perini may be based in LA, but it's no stranger to SF. The firm previously worked on Muni's central subway system, they know their way around. Renovations are scheduled to begin this summer and wrap up by summer of 2027. Follow me for more Bay Area real estate.
