Can San Francisco's Union Square be saved? Union Square is one of the most famous public plazas in the United States. For over 170 years, it's been SF's commercial and cultural heart, where locals shop, tourists gather, and major events unfold. But in recent years, Union Square has become a symbol of San Francisco's challenges. During the pandemic, it seemingly emptied out overnight. Storefronts went dark, visitor numbers plunged, and national headlines declared downtown San Francisco dead. Today though, something very different is happening. Union Square is now the focus of one of the most ambitious public-private revitalization efforts in the country. The city, property owners, and cultural organizations are teaming up to reimagine what Union Square could be in the next phase of San Francisco. I'm so excited to see all the great things happening there. I made a YouTube video that dives deep into the Union Square history, its tough years during and after the pandemic, and the strategies being implemented right now to bring it back to life.
