A long overlooked part of the city is poised to get one of the largest new housing developments in San Francisco in the coming years. Align Real Estate, with help from architect Molti Studio, just filed a preliminary application to convert the shuttered Safeway at 1335 Webster in the Lower Fillmore area south of Geary into about 1,800 brand new homes. The nearly 4-acre parcel will be subdivided to create a mix of buildings surrounding a central plaza and multiple new roadways, and 15% of the new units will be dedicated to affordable housing. The project is expected to be completed in multiple phases, the first of which will be the tallest building that could reach about 40 stories tall, plus a brand new 20,000 square foot grocery store to replace the closed Safeway. Locals in the area should be thrilled because there was concern that closing the Safeway would create a food desert in the area, so it's great to see a brand new large grocery store replace what was a large grocery store there to begin with. No firm timeline on approvals or construction, but I'll definitely keep you posted as plans progress, so follow me for more information.
