The only multipurpose rec center in Golden Gate Park is getting a much-needed makeover. The century-old Kezar Pavilion, an old-school gym that has played host to basketball legends like Bill Russell and Steph Curry, is undergoing a 2-year, $140 million reno that will create a drop-in public basketball court and rec center, as well as a designated disaster relief facility. The idea is to make the center a shelter for people who are impacted by a catastrophic earthquake, except the structure is so old that it needs to be renovated and retrofitted to itself withstand that catastrophic quake. The historic footprint of the building can't be altered, but the entire interior is going to be gutted. New bleachers, new basketball courts, courts, new locker rooms, new fitness centers, new multipurpose rooms overlooking the basketball court. Construction is expected to start in 2026, and I'm looking forward to see how it shakes out. Follow me for more Bay Area real estate.
