A Russian Orthodox cathedral turned movie theater is now the site of one of North Beach's nicest new construction condo buildings. Till the 1906 earthquake and fire, a Russian cathedral occupied the corner of Columbus and Powell Street across from Washington Square Park. After it was destroyed, a series of theaters, the Washington Theater, the Milano Theater, and then the Palace Theater took its place. After years of neglect and deterioration, the historic structure was destroyed, making way for something incredibly rare in North Beach, new construction condos. Complex is made up of 18 units on the top 4 floors of the building, plus 1 retail space on the ground floor. Units in the building range from 1 to 3 bedrooms, and prices range from about $1.1 million to $6.6 million for the penthouse. HOA fees range from about $750 a month all the way up to $1,300 a month, and amenities include a fitness center, a rooftop deck with fire pits and multiple seating areas, and some of the homes have private decks with views of the bay.
